Open resourceEngineering Authors and Reviewers
Control | Specification |
|---|---|
Page identity | |
Parent / sequence | |
/resources/engineering-authors-and-reviewers/ — route registry approval pending | |
Owned decision | Publish only verified identities, roles, expertise and review responsibilities |
Mandatory asset | Verified contributor profiles |
Provenance |
1. Direct answer and visitor promise
Engineering content is more trustworthy when readers can identify who wrote it, who checked the technical reasoning, what expertise the reviewer actually has, when the review occurred and how a correction can be requested. It does not imply that every article has been checked by a licensed engineer, that the company holds an accreditation, or that an individual has qualifications that have not been substantiated.
2. Page purpose and boundaries
A named author is not automatically a technical approver; an editor is not automatically an engineer; and a company representative is not automatically a certified expert. Distinguish all of these visibly.
3. What a visitor should be able to do
- 4. Mandatory asset — verified contributor profile schema
- 5. Role definitions and segregation of duties
Role | Accountability | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
Author | Drafts and owns the written explanation; resolves editorial questions | Not automatically the approving engineer |
Technical reviewer | Checks stated technical scope, assumptions, calculations and engineering boundaries | Not necessarily independent or professionally licensed |
Safety/compliance reviewer | Reviews explicitly assigned safety or jurisdiction-specific claims | Not a blanket certification of the page |
Editorial reviewer | Checks clarity, terminology, structure, accessibility and consistency | Not a substitute for technical verification |
SEO/AI-search editor | Checks metadata, structured data and search presentation | Cannot approve unsupported engineering facts |
Publisher / content owner | Approves release record, rollback and next review | Not proof of technical authorship |
External adviser | Provides bounded subject input with consent and disclosures | Not a general company endorsement |
For small teams, one person may perform multiple roles where permissible, but the record must state that explicitly. High-consequence technical statements should receive an appropriately qualified second review where available; otherwise mark the claim for review and keep it unpublished. No artificial “two-person approval” is claimed if only one reviewer participated.
6. Evidence ladder for a profile
Identity: confirm the contributor directly through a documented organisational channel. Role: verify appointment, contract, project assignment or authorised statement. Expertise: link to substantiated work areas, reviewed technical contributions or independently checkable qualifications where relevant. Publication: obtain affirmative consent for name, biography, portrait, article association and contact exposure. Record verification method, verifier, evidence reference and date in a restricted ledger. Do not upload identity documents, personal addresses, identification numbers or raw credential copies to public media storage.
8. Article-level attribution and review record
Record | Required value | Example placeholder — NOT an actual person |
|---|---|---|
article_id | Controlled RC page identifier | |
version | Approved content revision | v2.1 (illustrative) |
author_id | Verified contributor ID | CONTRIB-EXAMPLE-01 |
technical_reviewer_id | Verified reviewer ID if one participated | CONTRIB-EXAMPLE-02 |
review_scope | Exact paragraphs/calculations/claims covered | Specific power calculation boundaries |
reviewed_at | Actual signed-off review timestamp | Pending — never fabricate |
review_findings | Pass / conditional / fail and issue links | Conditional: operating profile data missing |
editorial_approval | Approver and approval date | Pending |
publication_status | Staging / published / withdrawn | Staging |
next_review_trigger | Scheduled date or event trigger | OEM change, correction, standard revision |
A reviewer associated with one article is not automatically attributed to every page in the same hub. Maintain an explicit many-to-many article/reviewer record, including review scope and version. Revisions that materially change formulas, safety statements or equipment selection require re-review; cosmetic updates may follow a documented lighter workflow.
9. Evidence-backed expertise taxonomy
The controlled taxonomy should map contributor competence to topic clusters: compressor technologies, portable/diesel systems, borewell/DTH duty, air treatment, distribution, controls, energy measurement, reliability, maintenance, rental integration and application engineering. Each expertise tag must have a justification and scope note. A contributor familiar with portable air equipment must not automatically be described as competent to approve medical breathing-air systems, pressure-vessel design or jurisdiction-specific legal compliance.
10. Public profile layout and content
Each approved profile begins with the consented display name, current verified role, concise expertise summary and a visible “Verified information last reviewed” date. Follow with evidence-backed focus areas, article contributions grouped by author/reviewer role, bounded professional background, disclosure statement, and a clear route to report an attribution or technical concern. Avoid decorative authority seals, unverifiable award logos, star ratings, invented quotations and synthetic photographs. If a photograph is not authorised, use a neutral typographic placeholder rather than a fabricated headshot.
11. Directory filtering and discovery
Allow users to filter by verified subject area and contribution role, with a text search over public display names and published topics only. Filters must not reveal pending profiles. Sort alphabetically or by clearly explained topic relevance, not fabricated seniority. Every result card should identify the verified role, limited scope and number of linked published contributions only when counts are calculated from live approved records. Empty results should suggest a topic resource route, not invent a matching specialist.
12. Worked editorial cases — hypothetical, not actual personnel
Case A — A technical article has a named author but no technical reviewer
Show the verified author if consented, but do not display “technically reviewed.” The page-level record states “Technical review pending” in the internal CMS. If the topic is safety-critical, retain staging hold until appropriate review is completed.
Case B — An employee changes roles
The profile owner receives a role-change notification. Verify the new title and employment relationship, update public text only after consent and approval, and preserve historic article contribution records without presenting the former role as current.
Case C — A contractor disputes a byline
Suspend the contested attribution pending a documented ownership review. Preserve original evidence in restricted records. Publish a correction where a materially inaccurate public statement was visible.
Case D — A reviewer checked only one calculation
Record the exact equation, assumptions and revision. Do not claim the reviewer approved the entire article, associated OEM products or all regulatory assertions.
Case E — A qualification cannot be substantiated
Remove the qualification claim from public copy or hold the profile. Do not replace it with a broad phrase such as “internationally certified expert.”
Case F — A portrait is supplied without rights evidence
Request explicit usage permission and provenance, or use a non-personal placeholder. Preserve the contributor profile text if separately verified and consented.
Case G — A standards revision changes technical advice
Attribution dates are not silently updated until an actual review is performed.
Case H — A reader reports a misleading safety statement
Record the claim, page/version, evidence and severity. Route to technical owner; where potentially hazardous, suppress the affected claim or page pending review.
13. Contributor verification intake and privacy
Use a restricted internal contributor-verification workflow rather than an open public form for personal credential evidence. Validate required name, role, consent scope and supporting evidence reference. Files should be allowlisted by type, malware-scanned, size-limited and stored outside public web roots with role-based access. Define retention and deletion rules before collection, including handling of consent withdrawal, historical article attribution and applicable legal recordkeeping. Never place private emails, phone numbers, identification scans or reviewer signatures into public structured data by default.
14. Contributor correction and escalation workflow
Step | Action | Evidence / owner |
|---|---|---|
1. Receive | Reader or contributor flags incorrect name, role, scope or article attribution | Ticket ID, page URL, issue type; support owner |
2. Acknowledge | Display neutral receipt and reference; do not promise timing | Submission status and safe confirmation |
3. Triage | Assess identity/privacy, technical safety and reputational urgency | Content lead plus technical/privacy owner |
4. Verify | Review source record and obtain contributor confirmation | Restricted evidence ledger |
5. Decide | Correct, clarify, temporarily unpublish or reject with rationale | Decision owner and disposition |
6. Publish | Update page, metadata, attribution and linked articles | Version record; SEO QA |
7. Close | Record outcome and notify permitted parties | Audit trail and retention controls |
15. Accessible interaction requirements
Use semantic headings, ordinary links and native form controls where possible. Every directory filter must have a persistent text label and visible focus. Keyboard users must be able to open profiles, change filters and return to results without losing position. Screen-reader announcements should report the number of matching profiles without reading the entire result set. Portraits need meaningful alt text only when an image conveys additional information; otherwise mark them decorative. At 320 CSS pixels and 200% text scaling, cards, disclosures and correction links must remain readable without horizontal scrolling. Respect reduced-motion preferences.
16. Error states and failure recovery
Condition | Required behaviour |
|---|---|
Missing contributor consent | |
Verification evidence expired | Flag review due; suppress affected claims |
Article links to unknown contributor ID | Do not render a broken public byline; alert CMS owner |
Contributor record withdrawn | Remove from directory and public structured data; handle historic attribution appropriately |
Directory service unavailable | Show cached approved content only if current and safe; otherwise accessible fallback |
Correction form invalid | Inline specific errors; preserve non-sensitive entered text |
Attachment scan failure | Reject securely; give user clear retry guidance |
Routing or notification failure | Persist permitted ticket securely; alert owner and display honest receipt status |
Schema mismatch | Block release; no fabricated Person markup |
