A compressor annual maintenance contract (AMC) turns servicing from a reaction into a plan. Instead of calling for help when the machine trips, the compressor is inspected and serviced at agreed intervals, consumables are ready before they are due, and every visit is recorded. What an AMC covers
Every contract is written around the machines on your site and the hours they run. A typical scope includes:
- Scheduled services at intervals set by running hours and the manufacturer's maintenance schedule: air filter, oil filter, separator and oil changes for screw compressors; valve, ring, oil and belt checks for piston compressors; engine and compressor servicing for portable diesels.
- Inspection visits between services: discharge temperature, pressure settings, load and unload behaviour, oil level and condition, leaks, belt tension, cooler cleanliness, drain function and controller alarms.
- Parts planning so that service kits, oil and wear parts are identified from the machine nameplate and ready before the visit.
- Breakdown support with an agreed response arrangement, diagnosis on site and a written report of the fault and the repair.
- Air treatment: refrigerated or desiccant dryer checks, filter element changes and automatic drain testing, because wet or dirty air damages tools and processes even when the compressor is healthy.
- Service records for every visit: what was checked, what was replaced, the readings taken and anything that needs a decision.
Types of contract
Labour-only AMC
Scheduled visits, inspections and labour are covered by the contract fee. Parts and oil are quoted and supplied separately when they are due. This suits sites that buy their own consumables or have a mixed fleet.
Comprehensive AMC
Labour and the routine consumables named in the contract, such as filters, separators and oil, are included for the contract period. Major repairs, airend overhauls and damage from causes outside normal wear are quoted separately. This gives the most predictable annual cost.
Breakdown-call arrangement
For sites with standby machines or light duty, a call-out arrangement with agreed rates may be enough. It is less predictable than a full AMC and does not include planned inspections.
The right choice depends on running hours, how critical the air supply is, the age and condition of the machine, and whether a standby compressor or breakdown rental is available.

How an AMC is set up
- Site survey. We record each machine's make, model, serial number, running hours, service history and condition, and the dryers, filters and piping around it.
- Baseline check. A first service brings each machine to a known condition. Faults found at this stage are reported and quoted before the contract starts.
- Schedule and scope. Visit frequency, included parts, response arrangement and exclusions are written into the contract.
- Visits and reports. Each visit ends with a written record. Readings are compared with the previous visit so that a rising temperature or falling pressure is noticed before it becomes a breakdown.
- Annual review. At renewal we review running hours, faults and costs and adjust the scope.
Why planned maintenance pays
Most compressor breakdowns are preceded by warning signs: a blocked air filter raising discharge temperature, a separator increasing oil carryover, a worn valve lowering delivery, a slipping belt, a drain that has stopped working. A planned visit catches these early. The cost of a scheduled filter change is small compared with lost production, an overheated airend or a contaminated air system.
Planned maintenance also keeps energy use in check. Clogged filters, wrong pressure settings and leaks make a compressor work harder for the same delivered air. An inspection that finds and fixes them often recovers part of the contract cost in electricity or fuel.

- Make, model and serial number of each compressor and dryer (a nameplate photo is ideal).
- Running hours per year and current hour-meter reading.
- Date and scope of the last service.
- Site location and access arrangements.
- Whether you want labour-only or comprehensive cover.
