BH05 DTH Hammer Air Requirement
Keep the hammer identity, pressure and airflow together.
A DTH hammer's air requirement is a value associated with a particular tool, configuration and operating condition. To use it responsibly, retain the document that supplied it and the qualifications attached to it.
A number copied into an enquiry can lose its meaning quickly. The pressure may disappear, a published estimate may become an asserted rating, or a hammer-only figure may become a complete compressor requirement. This guide explains how to preserve the evidence before it enters an equipment selection.
Reddy Compressors considers drilling-air enquiries using the identified equipment and documented duty. High-pressure availability and the offered supply require confirmation. A hammer consumption reference is one input to that review, rather than an approval of the complete drilling package.
Start with the exact hammer record
Record the manufacturer, model, relevant product identification and installed configuration. Add the bit identification and any documented changes that could affect the applicable specification.
Use the document that matches that equipment. A chart for a similarly named hammer or another generation should not silently become the governing reference. If the available paperwork is incomplete, ask the tooling supplier to confirm which document applies.
Some hammer families offer configurable air-cycle arrangements. Manufacturer literature describes selectable timing for one such family. This supports recording the configuration; it does not establish a universal adjustment procedure or a common consumption curve for all hammers.
Identification field | What to retain |
|---|---|
Hammer | Exact model and available product identification |
Configuration | Applicable variant and documented settings or modifications |
Associated tooling | Bit and relevant assembly information |
Source document | Title, reference, revision or date, and page |
Applicability | Confirmation that the document covers the installed equipment |
Unresolved item | Specific question and the person responsible for clarification |
An identification photograph can help locate a marking. It cannot establish missing operating data by itself.
A verified example of pressure-dependent consumption
The COP M6 operator manual provides the following technical-data entries.
Published pressure | Published consumption, l/s | Published consumption, CFM | Source qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
20 bar | 269 | 570 | No estimate label on this row |
25 bar | 378 | 801 | No estimate label on this row |
30 bar | 470 | 995 | Explicitly estimated |
These are reference entries for the identified document, not universal requirements for a hammer size. The absence of an estimate label does not establish independent test certification.
The table shows why a consumption figure must stay attached to its pressure. The source's estimated entry must remain visibly estimated when reused. Confirm document applicability and reference conditions before using any row for equipment matching.
Read the document before reading the curve
Begin with the title, model coverage and notes. Then identify the axes or table headings. Check whether pressure is labelled at the hammer, at another measurement point or only as an unspecified working pressure.
For a graph, retain the legend as well as the axes. Different lines can represent different configurations or stated conditions. Do not combine the pressure from one line with the flow from another.
Record how the value was obtained: a printed table entry, a reading from a plotted curve or a calculation. Those are different evidence types. A value estimated visually from a graph should not be reported with more precision than the graphic can support.
Keep the surrounding notes with a cropped chart. An attractive image that omits the legend or qualification may be unsuitable for a technical enquiry.
Preserve missing information as a question
A published figure can be useful while still leaving something unresolved.
Document issue | Appropriate treatment |
|---|---|
Pressure reference is unspecified | Retain the original label and ask for the basis |
Flow reference conditions are missing | Request the conditions before comparison with another flow figure |
Configuration is unclear | Confirm applicability to the installed hammer |
Value is marked estimated | Carry the qualification into the enquiry and comparison |
Only a graph is available | Record the reading method and reasonable precision |
Sources disagree | Preserve both references and request an authoritative resolution |
Do not fill these gaps by assuming that every supplier uses the same convention. Once an assumption is copied into several documents, it can become difficult to distinguish from the original evidence.
Convert units without changing the meaning
For a volume-flow unit conversion on the same reference basis:
1 litre/second = 0.06 cubic metres/minute.
Using the published 20 bar reference above, 269 l/s × 0.06 = 16.14 m³/min. This changes the unit only. It does not convert the figure into actual compressed volume inside the hammer, establish a free-air reference or reconcile it with another document's conditions.
Keep source values and calculated values in separate fields. Label rounding when presenting an approximate figure. If the manufacturer prints two units, preserve those published entries rather than silently replacing one with a recalculated value.
Before comparing a converted demand with compressor output, confirm that the flow definitions are compatible. “CFM” alone states a unit of volume per time; it does not supply all the conditions needed for a technical comparison.
Treat intermediate pressure points carefully
When the intended pressure lies between two printed entries, do not describe a simple arithmetic midpoint as a manufacturer-certified value. Establish whether the supplier provides a curve or an accepted method for determining the intermediate requirement.
If an estimate is legitimately used for preliminary work, record who made it, the method, its assumptions and its restricted purpose. Keep it separate from the published values. The person approving the final application should know which inputs are estimates.
Extrapolation outside the documented range needs particular attention. Extending a line on a chart does not establish permissible operation or supported consumption. Obtain the applicable evidence from the equipment authority.
The objective is not to prevent useful preliminary analysis. It is to prevent an analytical assumption from becoming an unqualified equipment commitment.
Identify the operating condition represented
Ask what condition the consumption data describes and what other activities the project expects the supply to support. Retain any stated test conditions and operational qualifications.
Avoid assigning one hammer figure to every activity simply because the same equipment remains connected. Where drilling, clearing or another activity has a separate requirement, obtain that information from the applicable equipment and application assessment.
The distinction between published data and field observation also matters. A field reading should include its measurement location, equipment configuration, operating activity and instrument information. Without that context, an apparent disagreement with a catalogue figure may not be a like-for-like comparison.
A difference is a reason to investigate the evidence and conditions. It is not, by itself, a diagnosis of hammer wear, a blocked passage or an undersized compressor.
Keep hammer consumption separate from the whole-rig requirement
Rig literature can list hammer demand alongside other air-consuming functions and totals with different inclusions. It may also identify an additional flushing requirement that depends on the assignment.
Attach the hammer input to the selection record with its scope clearly marked. The person reconciling the complete rig can then determine which other demands apply and which are already included elsewhere.
Do not append an arbitrary flushing allowance merely because the hammer exhaust contributes to flushing. Equally, do not assume that a hammer consumption row proves adequate hole cleaning for every depth and formation. The additional application requirement needs its own basis.
The useful handover is a verified component input with known limitations. The full compressor comparison follows after demand and delivery conditions have been reconciled.
Create a reusable hammer data note
Keep a short data note with the original source. It can accompany a sales enquiry, rental replacement request or proposed tooling change.
Data-note item | Required content |
|---|---|
Equipment identity | Hammer model, configuration and associated identification |
Source location | Document reference, revision and exact page or chart |
Operating point | Pressure and corresponding consumption as published |
Units and basis | Original units and stated reference conditions |
Data status | Published entry, source estimate, graph reading or separate calculation |
Conversion | Calculation and rounding, if a different unit is needed |
Scope | What the figure covers and what it does not establish |
Open questions | Missing conditions, conflicting records or applicability concerns |
Review | Person confirming suitability for the intended use |
The original document should remain available. A spreadsheet cell or message forwarded without its context is not an adequate substitute for the governing source.
Ask a precise question when the data is incomplete
A useful clarification request identifies the equipment, intended operating point and missing information. For example:
> Please confirm the air consumption applicable to the identified hammer and installed configuration at the proposed working pressure. State the pressure reference, flow reference conditions, applicable document revision and any qualifications affecting use of the figure. Please distinguish published values from estimates.
This is a request template, not a claim that a supplier has already provided the answer.
If two sources disagree, attach both and identify the exact entries. Ask which governs the installed equipment and why. Selecting the lower consumption figure simply because it fits an available compressor does not resolve the discrepancy.
Retain the response with the data note so subsequent enquiries use the same confirmed basis.
Frequently asked questions
Is there one air requirement for every hammer of the same nominal size?
A nominal size does not identify the complete model and configuration. Use the applicable manufacturer information for the installed tool.
Does a published consumption table establish a compressor size?
It supplies a component input. The complete rig demand, operating cases, delivery conditions and offered compressor performance still require assessment.
Can an estimated manufacturer value be treated as a tested rating?
Keep the estimate label. Ask for confirmation appropriate to the intended decision; do not upgrade its evidence status when copying it.
Does converting l/s to CFM establish free-air delivery?
No. A unit conversion preserves the underlying basis. The document must establish the relevant reference conditions and meaning of the flow figure.
Can a graph support an exact value at any pressure?
The graph's scale, plotted information and applicable conditions limit what can be read from it. Record the reading method and uncertainty, and obtain confirmation where the decision requires greater precision.
What should change when the hammer is replaced?
Review whether the existing consumption document still applies. Record the replacement identity and configuration, then update the data note and any selection that depends on it.
Bring the evidence into your compressor enquiry
Send the original hammer document, installed equipment identification and the operating point under consideration. Include any supplier clarification and label calculations or estimates separately.
