What these jobs demand

  • Dry, filtered or oil-free air where it reaches instruments or processes
  • Reliable standby, because a stop can hold up a crew or a shutdown
  • Compliance with the site’s permit, hazardous-area and safety rules, which the site owner sets
  • Fast mobilisation, clear hose and manifold plans and agreed connection points

Equipment choices, such as diesel or electric, oil-free or treated air and unit sizes, follow the same method as other rental jobs: see duty specification, diesel or electric, oil-free air and how to brief us.

Hazardous-area suitability, approvals and permits depend on the site and must be confirmed with the client’s safety team before any equipment is mobilised.

Field guide

Compressed air and nitrogen on oil and gas sites

Oil and gas facilities use compressed air for instruments, utilities and maintenance, and nitrogen for purging, blanketing and pressure testing. Many of these duties are safety related, and some take place in hazardous areas, so equipment selection and documentation need particular care.

Typical duties

DutyWhat it needs
Instrument airClean, dry, oil-free air at a stable pressure, with backup; a low dew point to stop moisture reaching valves and instruments
Utility and plant airTools, cleaning and maintenance; ordinary filtration
Nitrogen generation feed airClean, dry air to protect membranes or carbon molecular sieve beds
Purging and blanketingNitrogen at specified purity and flow
Pressure and leak testingAir or nitrogen at test pressure, often from portable high-pressure packages
Shutdown and turnaround supportTemporary air and nitrogen in large volumes for a fixed period

Points to settle early

  • Hazardous area classification of where the equipment will stand, and whether diesel engines need spark arrestors, air-intake shut-off valves or other protection to site rules.
  • Air or nitrogen quality, written as a purity or ISO 8573-1 class, with how it will be verified.
  • Redundancy for instrument air: standby compressor and dryer, and receiver storage to keep instruments working during a changeover.
  • Documentation: pressure equipment certificates, test records, hose certificates and permits required by the site.
  • Logistics: transport, fuel, access and site induction for remote locations.

Portable packages for projects

Turnarounds, pipeline commissioning and testing often need high flow or high pressure for a limited time. Portable diesel compressors with aftercoolers, dryers and boosters, combined with nitrogen generators where purity allows, are planned as a package with hoses, manifolds and safety equipment. Plan early: equipment for hazardous areas and high-pressure duties takes longer to prepare.

What to send for a quotation

  • Duty (instrument air, nitrogen purge, pressure test, shutdown support).
  • Flow, pressure and purity or dew point required.
  • Site location, hazardous area classification and project dates.
