Airend overhaul: what we do and what we arrange

8 min read10 sections

Why the boundary matters to you

When an airend fails, a plant manager wants one call and one answer. That is reasonable. But the work behind the answer often involves several people: the service engineer on site, the workshop that strips the element, a bearing supplier, perhaps a specialist machine shop for rotor or housing work, and sometimes a remanufacturer supplying an exchange unit.

Problems start when these roles are blurred. If a rotor is reground by a specialist and later fails, who answers for it? If an exchange element arrives with the wrong port arrangement, who fixes it? Knowing the boundary in advance means faster decisions, fairer warranties and fewer surprises.

Repair, rebuild, remanufacture and exchange are not the same

TermWhat it should meanQuestion to ask
RepairA limited fix to restore function, such as a shaft seal or one bearingWas the cause found, and is the rest of the element sound?
Rebuild / overhaulYour element stripped, measured and reassembled with new bearings, seals and gasketsWhich measurements were taken, and against what limits?
RemanufactureAn element restored through a defined industrial process, often by a specialist or manufacturer programmeWho carried out the process, and whose warranty applies?
ExchangeA remanufactured element supplied in place of yours, usually against your old one as a coreDoes it match exactly, and what are the core terms?
New elementA new airend of the correct typeSource, lead time and manufacturer’s conditions?

If a quotation uses these words loosely, ask for a plain description of the actual work.

The steps of an airend overhaul

  1. Site diagnosis – readings, alarms, oil condition, noise and vibration; deciding whether the airend is really the problem.
  2. Root-cause check on the package – cooler, thermostatic valve, oil filter, separator, intake filtration, alignment and ventilation.
  3. Removal – disconnecting and lifting out the element safely, and protecting open ports from dirt.
  4. Strip-down and cleaning – in clean conditions, keeping parts in order and photographing as found.
  5. Inspection and measurement – bearings, rotor lobes and tips, housing bores, bearing seats, end faces and clearances.
  6. Rebuild decision – rebuild as is, rebuild with specialist work, exchange, new element or package replacement.
  7. Specialist processes if needed – rotor regrinding or coating, housing bore or seat machining, balancing.
  8. Reassembly – new bearings, seals, shims and gaskets, set to the element’s specified clearances and preload.
  9. Refitting and alignment – coupling or belt drive set correctly, oil circuit flushed if there was debris.
  10. Commissioning and acceptance – warm and loaded run with recorded readings.
  11. Handover – job record, warranty statement and follow-up plan.

What we do and what we arrange

We would rather be clear about this than let a page imply capabilities we do not hold.

StepOur role
Site diagnosis and package root-cause checksDone by our own service engineers
Airend removal, refitting, alignment and commissioningDone by our own team
Strip-down, inspection, bearing and seal replacement, reassemblyCarried out by us for the elements we work on; we tell you at the outset if a particular element should go elsewhere
Parts identification and sourcingDone by us, from the nameplate, airend type and old parts, with fit confirmed before quoting
Rotor regrinding or coating, housing machining, balancingArranged through specialist processes where the findings call for them
Exchange and new elementsSourced by us where available; the supplier’s own terms are passed on clearly
Temporary air during the workFrom our own rental fleet

Whatever route is chosen, you have one point of contact with us, and the quotation states which parts of the work are ours and which are arranged.

When an airend should not be overhauled locally

Honest advice sometimes means recommending against a rebuild. We will usually say so when:

  • The housing is cracked or the rotors are badly scored or seized together
  • Bearing seats or bores are damaged beyond what specialist machining can sensibly restore
  • Correct bearings, seals or assembly tolerances for that element cannot be confirmed
  • The plant cannot wait and an exchange or new element is available sooner
  • The rest of the package is ageing and replacement makes better lifecycle sense

How to judge any airend overhaul provider

Whether you choose us or someone else, these questions separate solid work from guesswork:

  • Will you inspect and measure before giving a final price, and share the findings?
  • Which steps do you do yourselves, and which do you send out?
  • What parts will be fitted, and where do they come from?
  • Which checks will be done at commissioning, and will I get the readings?
  • What exactly does your warranty cover, from when, and on what conditions?
  • How will you deal with the root cause on the package?

Good providers welcome these questions. Vague answers – “we do everything”, “all brands, all models, any problem” – usually mean the detail has not been thought through, and you will find out where the gaps are only after the element has been opened.

Be cautious of anyone who quotes a fixed rebuild price without seeing the element, or who promises savings, turnaround or life figures without evidence.

Indian site conditions that affect airend life

Many airend failures we see in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh share local causes. Summer ambient temperatures of 40–45 °C, and higher in poorly ventilated rooms, push discharge temperatures beyond the normal range of about 75–95 °C. Dust from construction, quarrying and unpaved yards overloads intake filters and coolers. Unstable power and frequent restarts stress drives and bearings. An overhaul that ignores these conditions only resets the clock. Part of our job is to point out what on the site needs to change.

What a clear quotation for airend work looks like

The boundary should be visible on paper. A useful quotation for airend work separates the job into parts so you can see what is fixed and what depends on findings:

  • Diagnosis and removal – a defined scope that does not depend on what is found inside.
  • Inspection report – findings, photographs and measurements shared before any further commitment.
  • Rebuild scope – parts to be fitted and work to be done, confirmed after inspection.
  • Specialist work, if any – listed separately, with responsibility for that process stated.
  • Alternatives – exchange or new element, with their own terms, where they are realistic options.
  • Refitting and commissioning – including the checks to be recorded.
  • Warranty statement – what is covered, from when and on what conditions.
  • Exclusions – package faults, consequential losses and anything not inspected.

Staging the quotation this way protects you from paying for a full rebuild of an element that turns out to be beyond economic repair, and protects the workshop from committing to a price before it has seen inside. It also makes it straightforward to compare offers from different providers on the same basis.

Frequently asked questions

Do you overhaul airends in-house or send them out?

We carry out diagnosis, removal, strip-down, bearing and seal replacement, reassembly, refitting and commissioning with our own team for the elements we work on. Specialist processes such as rotor regrinding, coating or housing machining are arranged where the findings call for them. The quotation states clearly which work is ours and which is arranged, and you deal with us throughout.

What is included in a screw compressor airend overhaul?

A proper overhaul includes diagnosis, a check of the package for the root cause, removal, clean strip-down, inspection and measurement of bearings, rotors and housing, replacement of bearings, seals, shims and gaskets, any specialist work needed, reassembly to the specified clearances, refitting with correct alignment, and a warm, loaded commissioning run with readings recorded and handed over.

Can every airend be rebuilt?

No. A cracked housing, rotors seized or badly scored, damaged bearing seats, or uncertainty over correct parts and tolerances can make a rebuild unwise. In those cases an exchange element, a new airend or a replacement compressor may be the better choice. The decision should follow inspection findings, and a good provider will tell you plainly when a rebuild is not sensible.

Why should I ask who does each step of the overhaul?

Because responsibility follows the work. If a specialist regrinds a rotor or a remanufacturer supplies an exchange unit, their process and warranty matter as much as the workshop’s. Knowing the boundary in advance helps you compare quotes fairly, understand the warranty, and know who answers if a problem appears after commissioning.

Can you overhaul airends for any compressor brand?

We work on many makes as an independent specialist, including ELGi, Atlas Copco, Ingersoll Rand, KAESER, Chicago Pneumatic, Sullair, Doosan and Kirloskar. For each job we confirm that the right parts and assembly data can be obtained for that element before committing. Brand names and trademarks belong to their owners, and we are not an authorised distributor of any of them.

Can you keep my plant running while the airend is overhauled?

Yes, where it is practical. We supply electric and diesel rental compressors from our own fleet, sized to your real pressure and flow needs, and connect them to your air network for the duration of the work. Tell us your working pressure, typical demand and site layout so we can propose a suitable temporary set-up.
