Support for legacy and discontinued compressors

8 min read13 sections

Can an old or discontinued compressor still be repaired?

Usually, yes, at least in part. When a maker stops producing a model, its support typically reduces in stages: the machine is no longer sold, then some parts are superseded, then others become unavailable. Common wear parts such as filters, separators, belts, gaskets and many bearings remain available from the maker, from other machines that share them, or from quality aftermarket manufacturers. Harder items are model-specific airend components, controllers, display panels and some valves.

“Supportable” can mean different things, and it helps to be precise:

Support levelWhat it meansTypical case
Full supportService, overhaul and all critical spares availableRecently discontinued model with shared components
Maintenance supportRoutine service and wear parts; major repairs need case-by-case sourcingOlder machine in good condition
Conditional supportRunning is acceptable with monitoring while a replacement is plannedMachine with an obsolete controller or limited airend parts
Inspection onlyDiagnosis to inform a decision; no repair promisedMachine of unknown history or with severe damage
RetireRepair is unsafe or uneconomic; plan removal or sale for partsPressure vessel without documents, failed airend with no rebuild route

Identify the exact machine first

Older machines have often been modified. Before sourcing anything, record:

  • make, model and package serial number from the nameplate;
  • airend type and serial, motor or engine make, model and serial;
  • controller type and any software version shown;
  • receiver, separator vessel and safety-valve nameplates;
  • any non-original parts fitted during past repairs;
  • the year of manufacture and running hours.

The same model name can cover different serial ranges with different airends, valves or controllers. A part ordered by model name alone can be wrong. Photographs of every nameplate and of the old part are the most reliable starting point.

Finding documents and parts for a withdrawn model

  1. Collect any manuals, parts lists and service records on site or with the previous owner.
  2. Ask the maker or its distributors whether the model is still in their parts system, and which parts have superseded numbers.
  3. Identify parts by their own markings: bearing numbers, seal sizes, filter dimensions, valve types and thread sizes.
  4. Look for shared components across the same maker’s range or with other makers’ machines.
  5. Consider quality aftermarket parts where the duty allows, with fit and specification confirmed.
  6. For parts that are truly unavailable, consider reverse engineering from a sample by a competent workshop, or a preserved donor part from a retired machine.

Each route needs a compatibility check before fitting. A preserved donor part should be inspected for corrosion, elastomer ageing and dimensional wear, and its history should be known.

Inspect the condition before promising a repair

An old machine that still runs is not proof of remaining life. A useful condition assessment covers:

  • Airend: noise, vibration, bearing condition, rotor clearances where they can be checked, discharge temperature compared with the normal band of about 75–95 °C for oil-injected screws.
  • Reciprocating units: valve condition, piston rings and cylinder wear, crankcase oil consumption and blow-by, interstage pressures and temperatures.
  • Motor and drive: insulation resistance, bearing noise, coupling or belt alignment.
  • Portable diesel engines: oil pressure, blow-by, coolant condition, fuel system and starting.
  • Coolers: fouling and leaks, especially on machines that ran for years in dusty or hot conditions.
  • Pressure boundary: receiver and separator vessel condition, documents and any inspection history; hose condition and dates.
  • Controls and protection: whether high discharge temperature, overload and other shutdowns actually work.
  • Performance: measured delivery compared with the machine’s rating, and specific power if energy matters.

The non-negotiable boundary: pressure, temperature and protection

Some functions must be verified regardless of the machine’s age. A receiver or separator vessel without traceable documents, a safety valve of unknown set pressure, a hose of unknown rating or a temperature shutdown that cannot be tested should not be returned to service on assumption. These items protect people. Where the original part is unavailable, a correctly rated replacement chosen by a competent person is the answer, not a similar-looking part.

Obsolete controllers and electrical parts

Electronic controllers and displays are often the first parts to become unobtainable. Options include:

  • repair of the existing controller by a specialist electronics workshop;
  • a used or preserved controller of the same type and software version, tested before fitting;
  • a retrofit controller from a reputable maker, with all inputs, outputs and shutdowns mapped and tested;
  • simpler relay-based control for basic machines, where it keeps every essential protection.

Whatever route is chosen, test each protective function after the change: high discharge temperature, motor overload, phase failure, emergency stop and any pressure limits.

Repair or replace: making the economic decision

For an old machine, compare the options over the period you need the air:

OptionWhen it fitsMain uncertainty
Repair and continueMachine in sound condition, parts verified, energy acceptableNext failure on an unsupported part
OverhaulAirend or engine worn but core sound, parts or rebuild route availableHidden damage found on dismantling
Replace with newLong remaining need, high energy use, poor parts supportCapital and lead time
Replace with used or refurbishedMedium-term need, budget constraintCondition of the replacement machine
Rent while decidingUrgent air need, uncertain repair outcomeRental duration

Energy is often decisive. An older machine with worn elements may deliver noticeably less air for the same power. Measure delivered air and power, and work out the extra kWh per year over your running hours. Add the downtime cost of an unplanned failure on an unsupported part. If the plant cannot tolerate a stoppage, the risk of waiting for parts may outweigh the saving from repair.

Portable and reciprocating machines: special points

Older portable diesel compressors bring two support paths together: the compressor package and the engine. Engine parts are frequently easier to find than airend or control parts, because the same engine family is used in many other machines. Check engine identity separately from the compressor. Older reciprocating compressors are often the most supportable of all, since valves, rings, gaskets and bearings can usually be identified by size and type and sourced or made, provided the cylinders and crankshaft are within wear limits.

Running a legacy machine safely after repair

  1. Record the as-left condition: pressures, temperatures, vibration where measured, and protection tests.
  2. Keep a short list of critical spares that would cause a long stoppage if they failed, and hold them where practical.
  3. Shorten inspection intervals for the parts with the weakest support.
  4. Trend discharge temperature, oil condition and running current.
  5. Review the decision each year: is the machine still the right answer?

How Reddy Compressors helps

Since 2002 we have serviced and supplied parts for compressors of many generations and brands, including ELGi, Atlas Copco, Ingersoll Rand, KAESER, Chicago Pneumatic, Sullair, Doosan, Kirloskar and Gardner Denver. We are an independent multi-brand specialist, not an authorised dealer, which suits older machines whose makers may have stopped supporting them. We have tie-ups with all major and reputed brands. We:

  • identify the machine and its parts from nameplates, serial numbers and old parts, and confirm fit before quoting;
  • inspect condition and tell you plainly what can and cannot be supported;
  • carry out service, repair and overhaul, arranging specialist processes where needed;
  • source superseded, shared or quality aftermarket parts, and state which they are;
  • offer new, used/refurbished and rental replacements when continuing is not sensible, with rental from our own fleet as cover during repairs.

Our team of more than 20 service engineers and technicians covers Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and we supply parts, compressors and rentals across India. Call +91 99590 60718 or +91 92468 88812, or visit us at Srinilayam, 12-13-200, First Floor, Street No. 1, Tarnaka, Secunderabad 500017.

What to send us

  • Photographs of every nameplate: package, airend, motor or engine, receiver and safety valve.
  • Year of manufacture and running hours, if known.
  • The fault or the part needed, with a photograph of the old part.
  • Any manuals, parts lists or service records you have.
  • How critical the machine is and how long you need it to keep running.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still get spare parts for a discontinued air compressor?

Often, yes. Filters, separators, belts, gaskets, many bearings and seals stay available because they are shared across models or made by aftermarket manufacturers. Model-specific airend parts, controllers and some valves are harder. Identify the part from the machine itself, using nameplates, serial numbers and the old part, and confirm fit before buying. Superseded numbers from the maker are another useful route.

Is it worth repairing an old screw compressor?

It can be, if the airend and motor are sound, critical parts can be verified and energy use is acceptable. Measure delivered air and power, inspect the airend, and price the repair alongside new, used and rental options. If the machine runs long hours, the extra energy of a worn unit may justify replacement even when a repair is possible.

What can be done when a compressor controller is no longer available?

The options are specialist repair of the existing controller, a tested used unit of the same type and software version, or a retrofit controller with every input, output and shutdown mapped. Whichever route you take, test each protective function afterwards, including high discharge temperature, overload, phase failure and emergency stop, before the machine returns to normal duty.

Can an old compressor receiver be used if its documents are missing?

Not on assumption. A pressure vessel without traceable documents should be assessed by a competent inspector, who may require thickness checks and a pressure test under a controlled procedure, before it is returned to service. If its design pressure and condition cannot be established, replace it with a properly documented vessel and a correctly rated safety valve.

How do I decide between overhauling and replacing an old compressor?

Compare the options over the period you need the air: repair, overhaul, new, used/refurbished and rental. Include energy over your running hours, parts availability, the risk and cost of downtime, and the remaining life after overhaul. An overhaul makes sense when the core is sound and a parts route exists; replacement fits long remaining need, high energy use or poor parts support.

Do you service compressors of brands that have left the Indian market?

We service and supply parts for many older and discontinued machines of different brands, as an independent multi-brand specialist. Support depends on the machine’s condition and on whether critical parts can be verified. Send nameplate photographs and a description of the fault, and we will tell you honestly what can be supported and what alternatives make sense.
