Where compressed air is used on farms and in rural work

Farm compressed air is rarely a fixed plant. It is mostly mobile equipment taken to the job: a tractor compressor to a boulder in a field, a drilling rig to a borewell site, a small compressor in a workshop shed. Each job has its own pressure and flow.

JobTypical pressureTypical flowUsual machine
Boulder and rock breaking with pneumatic breakersAbout 7 bar (101.5 psig)About 85–145 cfm per breaker, depending on tool sizeTractor PTO compressor or small portable diesel
Rock drilling for blasting holes, trenching in hard ground, fencing post holes in rockAbout 7–10 bar (101.5–145 psig)About 85–145 cfm per drillTractor PTO compressor, 185–250 cfm portable diesel
Borewell drilling with DTH hammers200–400 psig (13.8–27.6 bar); special units up to 35 bar600–1,500 cfmHigh-pressure borewell compressor on the rig
Borewell flushing, cleaning and development by air-lift7–17 bar (101.5–246.6 psig), depending on depth and water columnVaries with well depth and diameterPortable diesel or borewell compressor
Tyre inflation for tractors, trailers and implements2–8 barLowSmall piston compressor
Farm workshop: impact wrenches, grease guns, spray painting, blowing dust from radiators and filters6–8 bar5–30 cfmTank-mounted piston compressor
Air-assisted sprayers and cleaning of sprayer nozzles2–6 barLow to moderateSmall compressor or engine-driven unit on the sprayer
Fish pond and tank aerationBelow 0.5 barHigh volumeBlower or paddle aerator, not a compressor

These are typical ranges. Tool manufacturers publish air consumption for each breaker and drill, and the compressor must deliver that flow at the tool, after hose losses, not just at its own outlet.

Tractor-mounted PTO compressors

A tractor compressor is a piston compressor driven from the tractor’s power take-off shaft, mounted on the three-point linkage or on a trolley. It turns the farmer’s own tractor into a mobile air source and avoids buying a separate engine.

  • Typical output: 100–140 cfm at 7–10 bar (101.5–145 psig).
  • Tractor size: usually 35–60 hp. The tractor must have enough PTO power at the correct PTO speed; running at the wrong speed reduces output and overheats the compressor.
  • Typical tools: one or two breakers, one rock drill, or a breaker and a drill alternately.
  • Uses: boulder breaking in fields, clearing rock for land levelling, digging pits and trenches in hard ground for pipelines and fencing, rural road and construction work, small quarrying.

Many tractor compressors earn income for their owners through hire to neighbours, contractors and village works. Reliability and fast spares matter more than anything else.

Running a tractor compressor correctly

  1. Engage the PTO at low engine speed, then raise engine speed to the rated PTO speed.
  2. Check crankcase oil level before every shift; piston compressors depend on it.
  3. Drain the receiver and check the safety valve regularly.
  4. Use the correct hose size and keep hose runs short; long thin hoses starve the breaker.
  5. Fit an inline lubricator for the breaker or drill as the tool maker specifies.
  6. Clean the intake filter daily in dusty field work.

Borewells on farms

Borewells are the main water source for irrigation in much of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. They are drilled by rig owners using down-the-hole (DTH) hammers driven by high-pressure compressors. The compressor both powers the hammer and lifts the cuttings out of the hole, so pressure has to overcome the water column and flow has to give enough up-hole velocity.

Pressure bandTypical flowTypical use
200–250 psig (13.8–17.2 bar)600–900 cfmShallower wells, softer formations
250–300 psig (17.2–20.7 bar)800–1,200 cfmMedium-depth wells, mixed formations
300–400 psig (20.7–27.6 bar)1,000–1,500 cfmDeep wells, hard rock, high water columns
Up to 35 bar (507.6 psig)Special unitsVery deep or high-head wells

Farmers normally hire a rig owner rather than own the compressor, but they benefit from knowing these bands: a compressor too small for the depth and water level slows drilling, raises fuel use and can leave cuttings in the hole. We supply all types, all brands and all models of borewell compressors: new, used/refurbished, rentals, service and spare parts. See our borewell library for the full engineering.

Farm workshops, sprayers and general use

A tank-mounted piston compressor in the farm workshop pays for itself quickly. Typical jobs: tyre inflation, cleaning tractor air filters and radiators, running impact wrenches for implement repairs, grease guns, and painting implements. Choose by the tools you use most:

  • Inflation and blowing only: a small single-stage compressor is enough.
  • Impact wrenches and spray painting: a two-stage compressor with a larger tank.
  • Fit a water separator and filter for spray painting; wet air spoils the finish.
  • Do not use air above 2 bar for blowing dust off skin or clothing; it is a serious injury risk.

Air-assisted sprayers in orchards and plantations usually have their own fan or engine-driven pump. Compressed air is used in some systems to atomise or clean nozzles, but the main choice there is the sprayer itself.

Energy, fuel and running cost

On the farm, running cost is mostly diesel and wear. Practical points:

  • Match the compressor to the tool. Running one small breaker on a large diesel portable burns fuel for capacity that is not used.
  • Fix hose and coupling leaks; they waste flow and make the compressor work harder.
  • Keep pressure at what the tool needs. Higher pressure than the tool’s rating does not make it work better and wears it faster.
  • Diesel fuel use depends on load, so a well-matched machine uses less fuel per hole drilled or boulder broken.
  • Service on time. On our own hire jobs, we change oil and service at every 300 running hours, because neglected oil and filters lead to the costly failures.

Indian farm and rural context

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have large areas of hard-rock terrain where boulders in fields and rocky subsoil are common, which is why tractor compressors and rock breakers are so widely used. Groundwater from borewells irrigates a large share of farmland, and government lift-irrigation and water-supply projects add demand for drilling and rock work.

  • Heat: summer temperatures of 40–45 °C, and above 45 °C on open sites, push piston and diesel compressors close to their limits. Work in cooler hours where possible, keep coolers and fins clean and watch temperatures.
  • Dust: field and drilling dust is the main cause of premature wear. Clean intake filters daily and change them on time.
  • Distance: sites are far from workshops, so carry basic spares: filters, valve plates, gaskets, belts and hose fittings.

Frequently asked questions

What size tractor is needed for a PTO compressor?

Most tractor-mounted compressors that deliver about 100–140 cfm at 7–10 bar need a tractor of roughly 35–60 hp, with enough power available at the rated PTO speed. Running the PTO slower than rated reduces air output, and an underpowered tractor will lug and overheat. Tell us your tractor make and model and we will match a suitable compressor.

How many breakers can a tractor compressor run?

Usually one or two breakers, or one rock drill, depending on the tool size and the compressor’s output. Each breaker needs a certain flow at about 7 bar (101.5 psig), given by the tool maker. Add the tools’ consumption, allow for hose losses, and compare with the compressor’s delivered flow, not its displacement. Running too many tools makes all of them weak.

Which compressor is used for borewell drilling?

Borewell rigs use high-pressure screw compressors, usually diesel-driven, delivering roughly 600–1,500 cfm at 200–400 psig (13.8–27.6 bar), with special units up to 35 bar. The right size depends on depth, hole diameter, formation and water column. We supply all types, brands and models of borewell compressors new, used, on hire, with service and spare parts.

Can a farmer hire a compressor for boulder breaking?

Yes. Short-term hire of a tractor or portable diesel compressor with breakers suits one-off land clearing or field preparation. Tell us the location, the size and quantity of rock, and how many days you expect to work. Hiring avoids buying a machine that sits idle after the job, and the hire unit is serviced before it reaches site.

Why does my tractor compressor give oily air?

The most common causes are worn piston rings or cylinders, which let crankcase oil pass into the compressed air, or an over-filled crankcase. Check the oil level first, then the condition of rings, cylinder and valves. Prolonged overheating in summer also speeds up wear. An overhaul with new rings and valve plates usually restores the compressor.

Can an air compressor be used for fish pond aeration?

For ponds, a blower or paddle-wheel aerator is the right machine. Pond aeration needs large volumes of air at very low pressure, and a compressor builds high pressure that is wasted, using far more power or fuel. A lubricated compressor can also put oil in the water. Small tanks can use a small oil-free air pump.

Calculators and worked examples

These tools give indicative figures for screening, comparison and for preparing an enquiry. They run in your browser and send nothing. No prices or tariffs are assumed: enter your own to see costs. Efficiencies and other figures shown are example values: replace them with your own. Results are not a performance guarantee or a design certificate; final selection is confirmed by a service engineer against the machine data sheet and the site.

Compressed air demand estimate

Add up the air your tools and processes use, apply duty and simultaneity, then add leakage and growth allowances to reach a capacity to enquire about.

The worked example below shows the method with fixed numbers. Turn on JavaScript to change the inputs.

Worked example

Inputs
  • Unit for the air each tool uses: L/s
  • Group A: number of tools: 6
  • Group A: free air each (in the unit above): 4
  • Group A: duty (%): 40
  • Group B: number of tools: 2
  • Group B: free air each (in the unit above): 15
  • Group B: duty (%): 60
  • Group C: number of tools: 1
  • Group C: free air each (in the unit above): 40
  • Group C: duty (%): 80
  • Simultaneity of all tools (%): 65
  • Leakage allowance (%): 15
  • Growth allowance (%): 10
Result
  • Connected demand: 94 L/s = 199 cfm
  • Average demand (duty-weighted): 59.6 L/s = 126 cfm
  • Simultaneous peak: 61.1 L/s = 129 cfm
  • Design basis (higher of average and peak): 61.1 L/s = 129 cfm
  • Design capacity with allowances: 77.29 L/s = 4.64 m³/min = 163.8 cfm

Method. Average demand = Σ(number × air per tool × duty). Peak = Σ(number × air per tool) × simultaneity. The peak can never be lower than the average, so the design basis is the higher of the two. Design capacity = design basis × (1 + leakage) × (1 + growth).

What to take from it. Leakage and growth allowances move the answer as much as any single tool. Where you can, replace catalogue figures with measured ones.
