Matching the oil-free machine to your duty in Hyderabad
“Oil-free” describes the compression chamber, not the air you receive. No oil enters the air during compression, but the air still picks up whatever the intake draws in, plus moisture, pipe scale and anything left in old oily headers. The definitions are explained on our page on what oil-free means, and the full technology comparison is on the oil-free compressors hub. Here the question is practical: what do buyers around Hyderabad usually need, and what can we do for each?
| Your duty | Typical flow and pressure | Usual oil-free choice | What Reddy Compressors offers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dental clinic, small laboratory, small instrument user | About 5–30 cfm at 7–8 bar(g) (101.5–116 psig), intermittent | Small 2–10 hp oil-less piston unit | Sales and hire only; hire units come with their air receiver. No service and no AMC for these small units |
| Packaging line, workshop process air, quiet indoor room | About 20–150 cfm at 7–12 bar(g), on-off demand | Two-stage oil-free piston, or multi-module scroll package | New, used and refurbished supply; service and spares on machines above 10 hp |
| Pharma, food, beverage or electronics base load, two or three shifts | A few hundred to about 1,500 cfm at 7–10 bar(g), steady | Dry two-stage screw, or water-injected screw at moderate flows | New, used and refurbished supply, service, AMC and spares; dryers and filters |
| Large textile or process base load | Usually well over 1,500 cfm at 3–10 bar(g), steady | Centrifugal, or several dry screws | Supply, service and spares |
| PET bottle blowing, high-pressure process | 30–40 bar(g) (435–580 psig) | Multi-stage oil-free piston, often with a booster | Sales (new and used), rental at 30–40 bar, service and spares |
| Shutdown, validation run, breakdown cover | About 50–2,000 cfm at 2–30 bar | Rental oil-free package | Rental, with dryers and filters as the duty needs |
Ranges are typical, not limits of any one make. Pistons suit intermittent duty and high pressure; screws and centrifugals suit long, steady running. For the specification method see our guide to specifying oil-free piston air, and for screw options the oil-free screw page.
Single-stage or two-stage piston: the Hyderabad summer test
An oil-free piston seals with self-lubricating filled-PTFE rings and rider bands instead of an oil film; the specification guide linked above explains how. What matters when buying is temperature.
Without an oil film the cylinder loses its main heat sink, and PTFE rings wear fast and valves coke or crack when discharge temperature runs high. A two-stage machine cools the air in an intercooler between stages, which lowers discharge temperature, cuts power and drops out some moisture (drain it). The cost is more parts and a higher price. See the oil-free piston compressor page and the two-stage oil-free page for stage arrangements.
Worked example: single-stage versus two-stage discharge temperature at 8 bar(g) in Hyderabad
Take a compressor delivering 8 bar(g) on a Hyderabad site where the atmosphere is about 0.950 bar(a). We assume an air-cooled oil-free cylinder compresses with a polytropic exponent of n = 1.30 (assumption; the ideal adiabatic value for air is 1.40), so the temperature exponent is (n − 1)/n = 0.30/1.30 = 0.2308.
- Discharge pressure = 8 + 0.950 = 8.95 bar(a). Overall pressure ratio = 8.95 ÷ 0.950 = 9.42.
- Single stage, 45 °C intake (318.15 K): 9.42^0.2308 = 1.678. Discharge = 318.15 × 1.678 = 533.9 K = about 261 °C (about 244 °C at a 35 °C intake).
- Two stage, equal ratios: each stage ratio = √9.42 = 3.07, so the intermediate pressure is 0.950 × 3.07 = 2.92 bar(a), about 1.97 bar(g). 3.07^0.2308 = 1.295.
- First stage at 45 °C intake: 318.15 × 1.295 = 412.1 K = about 139 °C.
- Intercooler cools to 12 K above ambient, 57 °C (330.15 K). Second stage: 330.15 × 1.295 = 427.7 K = about 155 °C.
So on a 45 °C afternoon the two-stage machine’s hottest cylinder runs about 155 °C against about 261 °C for a single stage: over 100 K cooler. With the adiabatic exponent of 1.40 the figures would be about 331 °C and 182 °C, so the gap is real whichever exponent you use. The same n = 1.30 model gives polytropic work of n/(n − 1) × R × T × (temperature ratio − 1), with R = 0.287 kJ/kg·K: 4.333 × 0.287 × 318.15 × 0.678 = 268 kJ/kg single-stage, against 4.333 × 0.287 × (318.15 + 330.15) × 0.295 = 238 kJ/kg two-stage, a saving of about 11%. Real figures vary with cooling, speed and valve losses, but the pattern holds: single-stage oil-free pistons belong on light, intermittent 7–8 bar(g) duty.
Ring and valve life, and how to know when they are worn
There is no single ring life figure; inspection intervals vary widely with size, speed, discharge temperature and intake cleanliness, and Telangana dust acts as a lapping compound on PTFE. Follow the maker’s schedule and your own capacity trend.
The simplest trend is a pump-up test. Worked example (illustrative): a 500 litre (0.5 m³) receiver is filled from 0 to 8 bar(g) with the outlet valve closed. Free air delivered = 0.5 × 8 ÷ 0.950 = 4.21 m³ at site conditions (ignoring receiver temperature rise; fine for trending if you test the same way each time).
- New rings: fill time 2.0 minutes. Delivery = 4.21 ÷ 2.0 = 2.105 m³/min = 74.3 cfm.
- A year later: fill time 2.4 minutes. Delivery = 4.21 ÷ 2.4 = 1.754 m³/min = 62.0 cfm.
- Loss = 1 − 2.0/2.4 = 16.7% of capacity.
A loss above about 10–15% from the commissioning figure, with rising discharge temperature, usually points to worn rings, leaking valves or a blocked intake filter. The method, including correcting for pipe volume, is on our pump-up test page.
Class 0 oil-free or oil-injected with filtration: deciding for Hyderabad industries
First, what Class 0 means. ISO 8573-1 Class 0 is not “zero oil”. It is a limit agreed between user and supplier that must be stricter than Class 1 (total oil up to 0.01 mg/m³). A maker’s Class 0 claim is normally a type test of one model; it does not certify the air at your point of use, which still depends on the intake, dryer, filters and piping.
An oil-injected compressor followed by coalescing filters and an activated-carbon stage can reach very low oil content when the filters are new and maintained. The difference is what happens when something goes wrong: a saturated element, a bypassed filter, or a separator failure sends oil downstream. With an oil-free machine there is no oil source in the compression to fail, though intake hydrocarbons and old oily pipework can still contaminate the air. The decision rests on the cost of contamination, not only the purchase price.
| Sector (Hyderabad region) | Typical air use | Usual choice | Typical drying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pharma and API units (Genome Valley, Jeedimetla, Pashamylaram, Bollaram belts) | Tablet coating, blister packing, process and product-contact air | Oil-free, often Class 0 specified by the quality team | Desiccant, about −40 °C pressure dew point for product contact |
| Food, dairy and beverage | Product contact, bottle and pouch filling, conveying | Oil-free for contact air; oil-injected with filtration for non-contact utility air in some plants | Refrigerated (about +3 °C) or desiccant by product and cold-room exposure |
| Electronics and electrical assembly | Cleaning, pick-and-place, instrument air | Oil-free | Desiccant |
| Textiles (air-jet looms, spinning) | Weft insertion, splicing | Oil-free often preferred, as oil stains yarn; large plants use dry screw or centrifugal | Refrigerated |
| Hospitals and clinics | Dental chairs, laboratory instruments, non-breathing utility air | Oil-free piston or scroll; medical breathing air follows its own hospital design | Desiccant or refrigerated with fine filtration |
| General engineering, fabrication | Tools, cylinders, blowing | Oil-injected screw is usually the economic choice | Refrigerated |
The dryer and filters set the delivered air quality. See refrigerated dryers and desiccant dryers, and for sector specifics the pharmaceutical air and food-grade air pages.
Running cost: oil-free against oil-injected with filtration
An oil-free piston is often less efficient than a good oil-injected screw, but filtration on the oil-injected machine adds pressure drop, and each extra bar costs about 7% more power. The honest comparison includes both.
Worked example: 150 cfm at 7 bar(g), 5,000 hours a year (illustrative)
A packaging unit near Hyderabad needs 150 cfm of dry air at 7 bar(g), two shifts, about 5,000 running hours a year. Tariff ₹8.50/kWh (illustrative; not anyone’s tariff). Flow = 150 ÷ 35.315 = 4.247 m³/min. Package specific powers are illustrative; use the figures from the offers you receive, measured to ISO 1217.
| Item | Two-stage oil-free piston | Oil-injected screw + filtration |
|---|---|---|
| Specific power (illustrative) | 7.4 kW per m³/min | 6.6 kW per m³/min |
| Extra pressure for filter drop | None | 0.5 bar, so 0.5 × 7% = +3.5% |
| Power drawn | 7.4 × 4.247 = 31.43 kW | 6.6 × 4.247 × 1.035 = 29.01 kW |
| Energy per year | 31.43 × 5,000 = 157,157 kWh | 29.01 × 5,000 = 145,073 kWh |
| Energy cost per year (illustrative) | ₹13,35,835 | ₹12,33,120 |
Difference: 2.42 kW × 5,000 h = 12,084 kWh, about ₹1,02,715 a year (illustrative) in favour of the oil-injected screw on electricity alone. From that, subtract the oil-injected machine’s extra running items: oil changes, separator elements, coalescing and carbon element changes, and an oil-water separator for condensate. Then add back the oil-free piston’s own wear items: rings, rider bands and valves, replaced more often than on most oil-injected machines. The net gap depends on the actual offers. For a pharma or food plant the question is whether one contamination event, with a batch rejection or line cleaning, costs more than that gap; for many product-contact users it does. For general engineering a well-maintained oil-injected screw with filtration is usually the sensible choice. Try your own figures in the running cost calculator.
45 °C summers, dust, monsoon and altitude: effects on oil-free machines
With no oil circuit to carry heat away, oil-free machines feel Indian conditions more.
- Heat. Compressor rooms in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh reach 40–45 °C in April and May, more if hot air recirculates. As the worked example shows, every degree at the intake appears magnified at discharge. Duct hot air out, give clear intake louvre area, and never let the machine breathe its own exhaust.
- Altitude and density. Hyderabad sits at about 0.950 bar(a). At 45 °C intake the air density is 0.950/1.0 × 293.15/318.15 = 0.875 of the ISO 1217 reference (1 bar(a), 20 °C). The machine moves the same volume, but about 12.5% less mass. Users who need mass flow, such as nitrogen generators or process users quoting Nm³/h, must allow for this.
- Dust. Fine dust shortens PTFE ring life and scores cylinders. Change intake filters on differential pressure and site intakes away from roads.
- Monsoon humidity. At 30 °C and 80% relative humidity at 0.950 bar(a), the air holds about 0.023 kg of water per kg of dry air. A 100 cfm (170 m³/h) machine therefore draws in roughly 4.1 kg of water an hour, and about 3.2 kg of it condenses once the air is compressed to 8 bar(g) and cooled to 40 °C: some 77 litres a day over 24 hours. Oil-free condensate has no compressor oil but can be acidic, so drains, receivers and pipes need corrosion-resistant fittings.
- Grid voltage. Piston machines start often; check starts per hour and voltage at the motor terminals under load.
- Diesel sites. Oil-free portable machines are diesel-driven on many sites. Compression is still oil-free, but keep engine exhaust well away from any intake feeding product air.

Frequently asked questions
Is a two stage oil free reciprocating air compressor better than single stage?
For pressures above about 8 bar(g) or for regular industrial duty, yes. Two stages with an intercooler keep cylinder temperatures far lower. In the worked example above, at 8 bar(g) and 45 °C intake, the hottest cylinder runs about 155 °C two-stage against about 261 °C single-stage, and work falls by about 11%, so rings and valves last longer. Single-stage oil-free pistons suit light, intermittent duty at 7–8 bar(g), such as a dental clinic or small laboratory.

What is the oil free air compressor price in Hyderabad?
The price depends mainly on technology (oil-less piston, two-stage piston, scroll, water-injected or dry screw, centrifugal), free air delivery and pressure, cooling (air or water), whether the package includes a dryer, filters and receiver, and whether the machine is new, used or refurbished. For the same flow, an oil-free machine usually costs more to buy than an oil-injected one. Send us your flow, pressure, air quality and running hours and we will quote options to compare.
Who are the oil free compressor suppliers in Hyderabad for all brands?
Reddy Compressors, Tarnaka, Secunderabad, is an independent multi-brand supplier operating since 2002. We supply new, used and refurbished oil-free compressors of all major makes, rent oil-free air with dryers and filters as needed, and service and supply spares for larger oil-free machines across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Call or WhatsApp 99590 60718, open seven days, 8:30 to 20:30.
Do you service small oil free dental compressors?
No. Small 2–10 hp oil-free compressors, including single-chair and small multi-chair dental units, are sales and hire only. Hire units come with their air receiver. We do not service or repair these small units and do not offer AMC for them. We do service, overhaul and supply spares for larger oil-free machines, such as two-stage and crosshead piston compressors, scroll packages above 10 hp, oil-free screws and centrifugals.
Why does an oil free piston compressor lose capacity over time?
Usually worn PTFE rings and rider bands, leaking valves, a blocked intake filter or a slipping belt; summer heat and dust speed all of these up. Track capacity with a pump-up test against a receiver: in the illustrative example above, a fill time rising from 2.0 to 2.4 minutes means about 17% less air. A loss above 10–15%, with rising discharge temperature, means it is time to inspect.
Is an oil free compressor more expensive to run than an oil-injected one?
Often slightly, on electricity. In the illustrative 150 cfm example above, the oil-free piston used about 12,000 kWh more a year than an oil-injected screw, even after allowing for the screw’s filter pressure drop. But the oil-injected machine needs oil, separator and filter elements and condensate treatment, and risks oil carry-over if a filter fails, while the oil-free piston has its own ring and valve replacements. For product-contact air in pharma and food, contamination risk usually decides it.
Can I buy a used oil free compressor with a warranty?
Yes. Our used and refurbished compressors carry a six-month warranty from the delivery or invoice date on the whole compressor. Consumables, misuse or wrong oil, service by others, and accident or site damage are excluded. Before buying any used oil-free piston machine, ask for the running hours, a pump-up or capacity test result, discharge temperatures under load and the history of ring and valve changes.
