14 bar portable compressors: duty, accessories and safe set-up

8 min read14 sections

What is a 14 bar portable compressor?

It is a mobile compressor, normally diesel-driven, with a maximum working pressure of about 14 bar gauge (203 psig). Most use an oil-injected rotary screw airend and fall in the 185–600 cfm range (about 5.2–17 m³/min), with larger high-pressure packages above that. Many are variable-pressure machines that can also run at 10 or 12 bar with more flow.

In our experience, 400–600 cfm machines typically cover 7–14 bar (101.5–203.1 psig), which is why 14 bar is a common upper setting for medium-to-large site compressors used in crawler drilling, long-hose blasting and pipeline work.

Settingpsig (approx.)Typical role
10 bar145Rock drills, blasting, standby plant air
12 bar174Cable blowing, long hoses, light drilling
14 bar203Longer cable routes, shallow DTH, quarry drills, pipeline support

Start with the compressor duty

Before thinking about accessories, write the duty down clearly:

  • flow required, and the pressure at which that flow is needed;
  • where the requirement applies: compressor outlet, after treatment or at the tool;
  • whether pressures are gauge or absolute;
  • the application’s normal operating pressure and, separately, its maximum permissible pressure;
  • operating pattern: continuous, intermittent or shift-based, and expected hours.

Then ask for the offered machine’s free air delivery at its 14 bar setting. A brochure figure for one variant does not describe every machine in the class, and flow quoted at 10 bar will overstate what you get at 14 bar. Remember the cost of pressure: about 7% more power for each extra bar, so use 14 bar only where the receiving equipment needs it.

Why the whole assembly matters

At 14 bar, stored energy in a hose is considerable. A failed coupling can whip violently, and a component rated below the system pressure is a hazard. This becomes especially important when a hire compressor is connected to customer-owned hoses, filters or manifolds whose history is not documented.

A hose assembly is the hose plus its end fittings. The pressure printed along the hose is the hose rating, not necessarily the assembly rating. Hose manufacturers note that some banded or clamped coupling methods can reduce the assembly’s working pressure below the hose’s own maximum. Ask for the assembly rating, or use factory-made assemblies with documented ratings.

A worked accessory check

Suppose a site has a hose marked for 16 bar maximum working pressure and plans to use it on a 14 bar supply. The ends are clamped fittings of unknown origin.

Evidence availableWhat it showsWhat remains open
Hose marking: 16 barThe hose itself is rated above 14 barRating of the complete assembly with its fittings
Fittings match the outlet sizeThey will physically connectPressure, temperature and service rating of the joint

Compressor safety valve settingHighest pressure the system can reachWhether every item is rated above that setting

The arithmetic is simple: 16 is 2 bar above 14. The engineering conclusion is not that the assembly is approved. The assembly needs its own rating, and every item must be rated above the compressor’s safety valve setting, not just its working pressure. This is an illustrative check, not a coupling recommendation; fabrication and inspection belong with competent people following the maker’s instructions.

Accessory checklist for a 14 bar package

  • Hose assemblies with documented working-pressure ratings above the safety valve setting.
  • Rated couplings with locking pins, and whip checks or restraints on each joint.
  • Isolation valve at the compressor outlet, opened and closed slowly.
  • Aftercooler, moisture separator, dryer and filters rated for 14 bar and the outlet temperature.
  • Manifolds and distribution pieces with their own pressure rating.
  • Pressure gauges at the compressor and at the point of use.
  • Receiving tool or rig rated for the supply pressure, with a regulator if the tool needs less.
  • Visual inspection before every shift: cuts, bulges, abrasion, exposed reinforcement, damaged threads.

Air treatment at 14 bar

Discharge air from a portable screw compressor is hot and saturated. For cable blowing, coating and pipeline duties, cool and dry air is usually needed. An aftercooler brings the air close to ambient so water condenses, and a moisture separator removes it. Where a lower dew point is needed, a refrigerated dryer typically gives a pressure dew point around +3 °C, and a desiccant dryer typically −20 °C or −40 °C. Check that each item is rated for the pressure and flow, and include its pressure drop when choosing the compressor setting.

Where is 14 bar air used in India?

  • Telecom and utility contractors blowing fibre-optic cable through ducts on longer or more demanding routes across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and other states.
  • Quarry and construction drilling with crawler drills and smaller hammers.
  • Shallow DTH work in favourable ground, where a full borewell compressor is not required.
  • Blasting with long hoses, where the extra pressure covers hose losses; blasting itself is about a 7 bar duty at the nozzle.
  • Pipeline drying, purging and test support under the client’s approved procedure, recognising the stored-energy hazard of pneumatic testing.

Normal oil-injected screw discharge temperature is about 75–95 °C, and the standard diesel-portable shutdowns are high discharge temperature, low engine oil pressure and high coolant temperature.

Running at 14 bar in Indian site conditions

Higher pressure means more heat of compression, so a 14 bar machine works its cooling package harder than the same machine at 7 bar. On sites in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, summer ambient temperatures of 40–45 °C, and above 45 °C on open sites, and fine dust from quarries, roads and construction add to the load.

  • Park the compressor on level ground with its cooling-air inlet and outlet clear, away from walls and other machines’ exhaust.
  • Blow down radiators and oil coolers regularly on dusty sites, and check the air filter restriction indicator every shift.
  • Check oil and coolant levels cold, before start-up.
  • Drain separators and fuel-water traps daily.
  • Keep hoses off hot ground and away from vehicle routes.

Buy new, buy used or hire?

Contractors with year-round cable-blowing, drilling or blasting work often buy, new or used and refurbished, so the machine is always available. A used 14 bar portable should be checked for airend condition, running hours, engine health and the pressure regulation system before purchase. Project work, seasonal peaks and trials usually suit hire, with servicing, breakdown support and accessories included in one arrangement.

Frequently asked questions

What is 14 bar in psi?

14 bar is 203.1 psi, using 1 bar ≈ 14.5 psi. Compressor pressures are normally gauge pressure, meaning above atmospheric. When comparing hoses, dryers, tools and compressors, check that every figure uses the same basis, because a gauge and an absolute figure differ by about 1 bar and can hide a real rating mismatch.

Can I use a 16 bar hose with a 14 bar compressor?

Only if the complete assembly, including its end fittings, is rated above the compressor’s safety valve setting, not just its working pressure. The marking on the hose describes the hose, and some clamped or banded fittings reduce the assembly rating. Use assemblies with documented ratings, fit restraints on every joint and inspect hoses before each shift.

What is a 14 bar compressor used for?

Typical uses are fibre-optic cable blowing on longer routes, quarry and construction drilling, shallow DTH work in favourable ground, blasting with long hoses, and pipeline drying or purging support under the client’s procedure. Use 14 bar only where the receiving equipment needs it, because each extra bar takes about 7% more power.

How much air does a 14 bar portable compressor give?

Machines in this class commonly deliver about 185–600 cfm (5.2–17 m³/min) at their 14 bar setting, with larger high-pressure packages above that. Variable-pressure models give more flow at 10 or 12 bar. Always ask for the free air delivery at the setting you will use, because a figure quoted at lower pressure overstates what you will get.

Do I need a dryer for cable blowing at 14 bar?

An aftercooler and moisture separator are the usual minimum, because hot, wet air can harm cable and ducts. Many contractors add a dryer, and some cable makers ask for filtered or oil-free air. Follow the cable and duct maker’s requirement, check every treatment item is rated for 14 bar, and allow for its pressure drop.

Can you supply a 14 bar compressor with hoses?

Yes. We rent and sell 14 bar portables and can supply rated hoses, couplings, aftercoolers, moisture separators and dryers as part of the package. If you plan to use your own hoses or filters, send us their markings, and we will tell you what needs confirming before connection.
