The district from a compressed-air point of view
Guntur’s compressed air follows its crops and its rock. Chilli and spice processors clean, destem, grade, grind, pack and sterilise on pneumatic equipment that must see clean, dry, oil-free air, in sheds full of capsaicin-laden dust that irritates and corrodes. Cold stores, hundreds of them around Guntur holding chillies, turmeric and seed, use compressed air for pneumatic valves, defrost systems and packing. Cotton ginning and pressing units run presses and gates on air in a lint-laden atmosphere. Tobacco processing and grading uses air for conditioning and packing. The lime kilns, limestone quarries and cement plants of the Piduguralla belt need blast-hole drilling air at the quarry and contractor air at the plant. Rice mills and food processors in the delta towns of Tenali and Bapatla need sorter and packing air. And around Mangalagiri and the capital region, construction and institutional buildings add portable and plant air.

Spice processing: clean, dry air in an aggressive atmosphere
Chilli processing is the duty that makes Guntur different. The air inside a processing shed carries fine chilli dust that irritates skin and eyes, settles on everything, and, mixed with the delta’s humidity, forms a corrosive film on coolers, electrical contacts and valve seats. The pneumatic equipment, destemmers, graders, pneumatic conveying, grinders’ pulse-jet dust collectors, packing machines and steam-sterilisation lines, needs air that is dry and oil-free, because an oily or wet air line contaminates the product and clogs the dust collector’s pulse valves. We approach a spice plant in a fixed order: the compressor room is placed outside the processing shed with its intake on the clean side; intake filtration is a grade heavier than the manual; the electrical cabinet is sealed and filtered; an oil-free machine or a food-grade lubricated machine with coalescing filtration is chosen according to the product contact; a refrigerated dryer is sized for a 45 °C inlet with the delta’s humidity allowed for; and every drain is electronic or timed. The pulse-jet dust collectors deserve their own note: their valves fire in bursts that an undersized receiver cannot carry, and a plant that complains of poor dust collection often has an air-storage problem rather than a filter problem. The food-grade air page explains the air-quality classes, and the receiver sizing tool gives the storage figure.
Cold stores
A Guntur cold store’s compressed-air demand is modest, pneumatic valves, defrost systems, packing, but its environment is hard: the compressor sits outside in the sun, the lines run into rooms at freezing temperatures, and water that condenses in the lines freezes in the valves. A refrigerated dryer with a pressure dew point low enough for the line’s coldest point, or a small desiccant dryer where lines enter freezer rooms, with insulated lines and drains at every low point, is the usual answer; and because many cold stores run several small compressors bought over the years, a single properly sized machine with a dryer is often cheaper to run than the collection.
Cotton, tobacco and rice
Ginning and pressing units around Narasaraopet and Chilakaluripet run presses, gates and pneumatic cylinders in an atmosphere full of lint that blocks compressor coolers in weeks; the answers are a protected intake, a cooler cleaned on an inspection calendar and a room with a real outlet for hot air. Tobacco grading and conditioning uses air for pneumatic equipment and packing in a humid shed; the dryer matters. Rice mills in the delta towns run colour sorters that need stable, dry, clean air, and the notes on the Nizamabad page apply.
The Piduguralla lime and cement belt
Limestone quarrying for the lime kilns and cement plants is blast-hole drilling with wagon drills and DTH hammers at 7 to 25 bar(g), in white, alkaline dust that coats coolers and blocks filters; the kilns and plants need contractor air for maintenance, blasting and painting. Intake filtration a grade heavier than the manual, intakes away from haul roads, cabinet filters, and inspection-based cleaning intervals apply, and the DTH drilling guide covers the pressure arithmetic. The belt is reachable from Secunderabad through Nalgonda as well as through Guntur, which is the shorter run for rental deliveries.
Key facts for a Guntur site
- Distance: about 270 km from Tarnaka by NH 65; the Piduguralla belt is nearer by the Nalgonda road. A planned visit or delivery is a day.
- Climate: hot and humid; summer highs around 40 °C with high humidity and a long monsoon; humidity is the design condition for dryers.
- Atmosphere: chilli and spice dust in processing sheds, lint at ginning units, lime dust in the western belt, salt air at Bapatla and the coast.
- Power: the city’s supply is good; cold stores and processors on rural feeders see interruptions and should size receivers and consider standby.
- What we do here: sales of new machines through our supply tie-ups, inspected used and refurbished machines from our Secunderabad yard, rental from our own fleet, service and repair of all makes, maintenance contracts, overhauls, spares, dryers and filters.
Sales: new, used and refurbished
For a spice processor or a food plant we size from the equipment list, the product-contact requirement and the hours, and we design the room, intake, filtration, dryer and drains as part of the supply; the selection guide sets out the method. We have supply tie-ups with all major makes, we are not the authorised dealer of any, and we recommend from the job; for a Guntur plant the comparison is on air quality, energy and how the machine is built for dust and humidity. For a cold store, a ginning unit or a workshop, an inspected used or refurbished machine from our yard, load-tested with a six-month warranty and its test sheet, with a new dryer, is often the right value; the used compressors page sets out what is inspected.
Rental in Guntur
Our fleet supplies portable diesel compressors for quarry, construction, blasting and shutdown work, and skid-mounted electric screw compressors, with dryers and filtration, as standby or supplementary air for processors in their peak season, which for chillies runs through the harvest and market months. Delivery is a day’s run, hire is usually by the month, machines arrive with hoses and a commissioning check, and fuel for a diesel machine is the hirer’s. The own-or-hire calculator lets a contractor run the decision with their own figures.
Service, repair and maintenance contracts
| Situation | What we need first | What then happens |
|---|---|---|
| Spice plant: wet or oily air, dust-collector valves failing | Compressor, dryer and filter nameplates, receiver size, photographs of drains and the room | Telephone diagnosis; usually dryer, filtration, drains or storage, with a visit to fit and test |
| Cold store: valves freezing, pressure loss | Compressor and dryer nameplates, line routing, coldest-room temperature | Dew-point check and a dryer or line-drain answer |
| Compressor tripping or losing pressure | Nameplate, controller display or fault code, photographs of the cooler and intake | Telephone diagnosis, then a visit with the parts the symptom points to |
| Quarry compressor fault | Nameplate, hours, gauge readings under load, hammer and hole details | A visit with filters, valves and instruments to test under load |
| Maintenance contract | Machine list with nameplates, hours, criticality, season dates | A visit calendar that puts the main service before the season, consumables carried, dryers and drains included |
A contract that schedules the main service before the chilli season, with the dryer and drains included, prevents most of the calls we attend in Guntur; the AMC page explains the structure.
Spare parts to Guntur
Intake and cabinet filters, separator elements, oil (including food-grade), belts, inlet and minimum-pressure valves, thermostatic elements, dryer filters, pulse-valve diaphragms, drain valves and controller sensors are what the district consumes, and spice dust and lint shorten every interval. Parts travel with the service engineer for planned work or by road and courier for a plant’s own fitter. We identify a part from the nameplate and a photograph of the component, not from the canopy name; the spare parts page explains what to photograph.
A worked example: a chilli processing and grinding plant
A processor near Guntur runs destemming, grading, two grinding lines with pulse-jet dust collectors, pneumatic conveying and packing, from a 30 kW oil-injected screw compressor with a 500-litre receiver, a small refrigerated dryer and manual drains, and complains that the dust collectors clean poorly and that packed product is sometimes damp. The dust collectors’ pulse valves fire in bursts that the small receiver cannot carry, so header pressure collapses during cleaning cycles; the dryer is sized for the compressor’s nominal flow at a 35 °C inlet and runs beyond its capacity through the humid season; and the manual drains are opened weekly. From the equipment list the average demand is about 4.2 m³/min with pulse peaks near 7 m³/min. The answer keeps the compressor, adds a 2,000-litre receiver with a dedicated header to the dust collectors, replaces the dryer with one sized for a 45 °C inlet at the full flow, adds a coalescing filter pair and timed drains, moves the intake to the clean side of the building with heavier filtration and a cabinet filter, and puts the plant under a maintenance contract with the main service before the season. The dust collectors clean properly because the storage carries the pulses; the product stops going damp because the air is dry.
Common mistakes at Guntur sites
- Placing the compressor inside the processing shed where chilli dust is thickest.
- Sizing a dryer from the compressor’s nominal flow at a cool inlet, then running it through a humid season.
- Expecting a 500-litre receiver to carry pulse-jet dust-collector bursts.
- Draining receivers by hand in the monsoon.
- Running cold-store lines into freezer rooms without a dew point low enough for the coldest point.
- Ordering a part by the canopy name rather than the number on the component.

Short explainers on this topic
Slide-by-slide engineering explainers from Reddy Compressors. More in the video library.
What kind of air does a chilli processing plant need?
Dry, clean and oil-free at the point of product contact, with the compressor placed outside the processing shed, heavier intake filtration, a dryer sized for the humidity and electronic drains. Send the equipment list and we will design the chain.
Why do my dust collectors clean poorly?
Often because the receiver cannot carry the pulse valves’ bursts and header pressure collapses during cleaning. Storage and a dedicated header usually fix it; send the receiver size and the collector details.
Can you supply a compressor and dryer for a cold store?
Yes, sized for the valves, defrost and packing duty with a dew point low enough for the coldest line, and insulated lines and drains designed with it.
Do you rent standby compressors for the chilli season?
Yes, from our own fleet, with dryer and filtration, delivered and commissioned on site and hired by the month.
Can you service a compressor of a make you did not supply?
Yes. We service and repair every major make of compressor and dryer and supply parts for them. Send the nameplates.
Do you cover the Piduguralla lime and cement belt?
Yes, for quarry drilling compressors and contractor air at the kilns and plants, reachable from Secunderabad by the Nalgonda road.
Is a used compressor sensible for a ginning unit?
Often, yes, with a new dryer and a protected intake. Inspected, load-tested used and refurbished machines from our yard come with a six-month warranty and a test sheet.
