Air compressors in Khammam and Kothagudem: mining belt, granite, rice and drilling

10 min read16 sections

The district from a compressed-air point of view

Khammam’s demand for compressed air comes from four directions. The coal belt from Kothagudem to Manuguru and Yellandu supports a large population of contractors: workshops that rebuild mining equipment, fabrication shops, washeries and power-station support, haulage yards and construction firms. They need reliable plant air for tools, tyre bays and blast cleaning, and they need it to run through heat and coal dust. The granite quarries of Khammam, famous for their black stone, need high-pressure portable compressors for line drilling and wire-saw work. The agricultural plain around Khammam, Madhira and Wyra runs rice mills, chilli processing and cold stores on dry, clean air. And the uplands between them are borewell country, where DTH rigs drill through hard rock for irrigation and drinking water.

Centre Approximate road distance from Tarnaka Typical route What we are usually asked for there
Khammam town 190–200 km NH 365 via Suryapet Workshops, rice mills, cold stores, hospitals, granite yards
Kothagudem and Palvancha 250–260 km Via Khammam Mining-belt contractors, power-station support, fabrication
Yellandu and Manuguru 230–300 km Via Khammam Mine-linked workshops, construction
Sathupalli and Wyra 200–240 km Via Khammam Granite quarries, rice mills, drilling
Madhira 220 km Via Khammam Rice and agro-processing
Bhadrachalam 300–310 km Via Kothagudem Construction, drilling, temple-town hospitals and hotels

Contractor air for the coal belt

The mines have their own engineering, and we do not work inside the mines. The contractors around them are our customers: equipment rebuild workshops, tyre bays that reseat and inflate the largest tyres in the state, fabrication shops making chutes and structures, painting and blasting yards, and construction firms building for the collieries and the power stations. Their compressed-air needs are ordinary in pressure, 7 to 10 bar g, and extraordinary in environment. Coal dust is fine, abrasive and conductive; it blocks intake filters, coats coolers, and gets into electrical cabinets. We specify intake filtration one grade heavier than the manual asks for, we place the intake away from haul roads, we fit cabinet filters on the electrical panel, and we set cleaning intervals from inspection. A tyre bay needs a receiver large enough to inflate a large mining tyre in reasonable time, and that is a receiver-sizing question rather than a compressor-size question; the receiver sizing tool gives the figure.

Granite quarries: Khammam black stone

Khammam’s quarries work a hard, dense stone, and the drilling that splits it is demanding. Line drilling with DTH hammers needs 17 to 25 bar g at the hammer, blast-hole drilling with wagon drills needs 7 to 12 bar g, and wire saws need flushing air and tensioning air. A quarry on a 44 °C bench in May needs a portable diesel compressor chosen with a summer margin, because both the engine and the airend lose output in heat; and it needs a cooler that is cleaned on an inspection calendar, not a catalogue one. The DTH drilling guide sets out the arithmetic for hammer size, hole size and pressure, and it applies to quarry line drilling directly.

Rice, chillies and cold stores on the plain

Rice mills in Khammam and Madhira run colour sorters, bagging lines and pneumatic conveying on compressed air; chilli processing and cold stores use air for sorting, packing and pneumatic valves. The faults are familiar: husk and chilli dust in the intake, water in the lines during the monsoon, ejector valves failing on sorters fed with wet air. A protected intake, a receiver sized for the sorter’s pulses and a refrigerated dryer with working drains are the standard fixes, and the dryer is sized for the summer inlet temperature.

Borewell and DTH drilling in the Khammam uplands

The hard-rock uplands between Khammam, Sathupalli and the Godavari are drilled by DTH rigs through the dry season. The compressor on the rig is sized from the hammer, the hole size and the water column it must lift, not from the rig’s advertised depth, and in these uplands bores go deep. Three things matter here as they do across Telangana: the pressure at the bottom of a deep hole is the compressor’s pressure less the water column; the engine and airend both derate in May heat; and dust fills the intake filter long before the manual’s interval. We service rig compressors of every make, supply the spares that rigs consume, and supply new and inspected used rig compressors with their test sheets.

Key facts for a Khammam site

  • Distance: about 195 km from Tarnaka to Khammam town by NH 365; Kothagudem is 60 km further and Bhadrachalam a further 50 km. A planned visit or delivery is a working day; a Bhadrachalam visit may need an overnight stay.
  • Climate: hot; May highs around 44 °C and among the hottest readings in the state. The south-west monsoon from June brings high humidity and heavy rain in the Godavari belt.
  • Dust: coal dust in the mining belt, stone dust at quarries, husk and chilli dust on the plain; each needs its own intake filtration and cleaning interval.
  • Power: rural feeders on the plain and in the uplands interrupt; receivers and standby machines are sized accordingly.
  • What we do here: sales of new machines through our supply tie-ups, inspected used and refurbished machines from our Secunderabad yard, rental from our own fleet, service and repair of all makes, maintenance contracts, overhauls, spares, dryers and filters.

Sales: New, used and refurbished

A mining-belt workshop buying its first proper screw compressor, a quarry stepping up to DTH line drilling, a rice mill replacing a worn piston machine: each is sized from the job. We have supply tie-ups with all major makes, we are not the authorised dealer of any, and we recommend from the duty and the environment. For quarries and rigs, the comparison between makes is made on specific fuel consumption and on how the machine is built for dust and heat. For workshops and mills, an inspected used or refurbished machine from our yard, load-tested with a six-month warranty and delivered with its test sheet, is often the right value; the used compressors page explains what is inspected.

Rental in Khammam and the Godavari belt

Our rental fleet supplies portable diesel compressors for quarry, drilling and construction work, and skid-mounted electric screw compressors to keep a workshop or mill running during an overhaul. Because delivery to the district is a day each way, and to Bhadrachalam longer, hire is planned by the month, the machine arrives with hoses and a commissioning check, and fuel is the hirer’s. For construction work for the collieries and power stations, where sites move, we plan the relocation of the machine as part of the hire. The own-or-hire calculator lets a Khammam contractor run the decision with their own hours and fuel figures.

Service, repair and maintenance contracts

Situation What we need first What then happens
Workshop compressor tripping in the coal belt Nameplate, controller display, photographs of the intake filter, cooler and electrical cabinet Telephone diagnosis, then a service engineer with filters, cooler cleaning equipment and the likely sensor or valve
Quarry or rig compressor losing pressure Nameplate, hours, gauge readings under load, hammer and hole details A visit with filters, valves and the test instruments to check the machine under load on site
Rice-mill sorter misfiring Compressor and dryer nameplates, drain condition, pressure dew point if known Dryer, drains and filtration inspected with the compressor; usually a drain or dryer fix rather than a compressor fault
Overhaul or airend exchange Hours, noise and vibration history, oil analysis if available The airend goes to our Secunderabad workshop; a rental or loan machine covers production
Maintenance contract Machine list with nameplates, hours, criticality A visit calendar from hours, consumables carried, dryers and drains included

A maintenance contract is the sensible arrangement for a Khammam customer because an unplanned trip costs a day and the dust here shortens every interval; the AMC page explains the structure.

Spare parts to the district

Intake filters, separator elements, oil, belts, inlet and minimum-pressure valves, thermostatic elements, drain valves and controller sensors are what Khammam consumes, and coal-belt workshops consume intake filters faster than anywhere else we serve. Parts travel with the service engineer for planned work or by road for a customer’s own fitter. We identify a part from the nameplate and a photograph of the component, not from the canopy name; the spare parts page sets out what to photograph. A coal-belt workshop should hold a season of intake filters and a spare drain valve; a quarry should hold filters, belts and a thermostatic element.

A worked example: A tyre and rebuild workshop at Kothagudem

A contractor’s workshop that services haulage trucks and rebuilds mining equipment asks for a compressor for pneumatic tools, a tyre bay, a blast cabinet and a paint booth. The tools and the booth are steady users; the tyre bay and blast cabinet are intermittent but heavy. We estimate an average demand of about 3.2 m³/min with peaks near 6 m³/min when the blast cabinet and a tyre inflation coincide. The answer is a 30 kW fixed-speed screw compressor at 8 bar g with a 1,500-litre receiver to carry the peaks, a refrigerated dryer sized for a 45 °C inlet to protect the paint booth, a coalescing filter pair, and heavy-duty intake filtration placed on the side of the shed away from the haul road, with a cabinet filter on the electrical panel. The workshop is 250 km from Secunderabad, so the compressor is placed under a maintenance contract from commissioning, with intake filters and a drain valve held on site and the cooler cleaned at every visit.

Common mistakes at Khammam sites

  • Fitting a standard intake filter in a coal-dust environment and blaming the compressor when it blocks in weeks.
  • Putting the compressor intake on the haul-road side of the shed.
  • Choosing a quarry or rig compressor by nameplate flow with no margin for a 44 °C bench.
  • Running a rice-mill sorter on undried air and replacing ejector valves every season.
  • Towing a portable compressor to a quarry on worn tyres and a damaged hitch.
  • Ordering a part by the canopy name rather than the number on the component.

How Reddy Compressors helps

We have served Khammam’s contractors, quarries, mills and drillers from Secunderabad for more than two decades. We are an independent, multi-brand business with supply tie-ups across all major makes, our own rental fleet, our own yard of inspected used machines, a workshop for airend and engine work, and more than 20 service engineers and technicians, all working from Tarnaka.

What to send us

  • A photograph of the compressor nameplate and, for a fault, the controller display or gauges under load.
  • Where the site is: the industrial area, quarry, mill or village and the nearest landmark.
  • For a quarry or rig: the drill and hammer models, hole sizes and depths.
  • For a workshop or mill: the list of air users, the pressure and the hours.
  • For rental: the duty, pressure, flow, period, and whether the site has three-phase power.

Do you work inside the collieries?

No. We serve the contractors, workshops and construction firms around the mining belt, and the power-station support contractors, with plant air, rental air, service and spares.

Can you supply a compressor for Khammam granite line drilling?

Yes. We size from the hammer, the hole and the bench conditions, with a summer margin, and supply new machines through our tie-ups or inspected used machines from our yard.

How do you handle a breakdown 250 km away?

By telephone and photographs first. The nameplate, the fault and the controller display decide which parts the service engineer carries, so that the first visit is the one that fixes the machine. We do not promise fixed arrival times.

Do you rent portable compressors for drilling and construction in the district?

Yes, from our own fleet, delivered by road, commissioned on site and hired by the month. Fuel is the hirer’s.

My workshop compressor’s intake filter blocks every month. Is that normal here?

In the coal belt, yes. Heavier filtration, a better intake position and a shorter cleaning interval set from inspection are the answers, not a different compressor.

Can you service a dryer as well as the compressor?

Yes. Dryers, filters, drains and receivers are inspected with the compressor on every visit and are included in a maintenance contract.

Is a used compressor sensible for a mill in Madhira?

Often, yes. An inspected, load-tested refurbished machine with a six-month warranty and its test sheet is a sound purchase for a known duty. Send the mill’s air users and hours.
