Working in Vizag from Secunderabad
We do not have a branch in Visakhapatnam, and we say so plainly. What we have is more than two decades of project work on the coast, a rental fleet that goes there by road, a workshop in Secunderabad for airend and engine rebuilds, and service engineers who plan a Vizag trip to be worth the distance. In practice that means three ways of working. For a plant with several compressors, a maintenance contract puts a service engineer on site on a calendar built from running hours, with parts carried, and groups the visit with other Vizag customers. For a project, a shutdown or a construction phase, rental machines are delivered with dryers and filtration specified against the site’s requirement, commissioned on site, and attended as part of the hire. For a breakdown, the nameplate, the fault and the controller display decide what the service engineer carries, and the visit is agreed with you rather than promised to the hour. The Andhra Pradesh page sets out the general approach; this page is about Vizag’s particular duties.

Salt air: The condition that decides compressor life on the coast
Everything about compressed air in Vizag starts with the air itself. Within a few kilometres of the sea it carries salt, and in the port, harbour and shipyard areas it carries salt, coal dust, iron-ore dust and diesel soot together. Salt attacks aluminium coolers, copper windings, steel receivers and the printed circuits of controllers; it turns a two-year oil-cooler life into a one-year life and a dry receiver into a pitted one. The answers are specific. Coolers are specified with a marine coating or in a material that resists salt, and cleaned on an inspection calendar; electrical cabinets are sealed with filtered ventilation; receivers are internally coated or galvanised and drained properly; compressor rooms draw intake air from the landward side where possible; and painted canopies are inspected for corrosion at every service. A machine specified for an inland factory and installed beside the harbour without these measures will cost more in repairs than the difference in price would have cost at the outset.
Humidity is the second condition. Vizag is humid for most of the year and very humid in the monsoon, so every compressor condenses large volumes of water and every dryer runs loaded. Refrigerated dryers are sized for a 40 to 45 °C inlet with the coastal humidity allowed for; desiccant dryers are specified where the process needs a low dew point; and drains are electronic or timed, never manual, because a manual drain on the coast is a receiver full of water by Monday.
Port, steel and shipyard contractors
The port, the steel plant and the shipyard have their own engineering and their own compressed-air plants; our customers are the contractors who work in and around them. Stevedoring and cargo-handling contractors need portable air for pneumatic tools and cleaning; steel-plant contractors need blasting, painting and tool air for shutdown and refractory work; fabrication and heavy-engineering shops in Gajuwaka need plant air for tools, blasting cabinets and paint booths; ship-repair contractors need portable compressors for hull blasting, painting and pneumatic tools on the dock. The common requirements are dry air for blasting and painting, so that coatings do not fail, and compressors that survive the dock environment. For blasting, the arithmetic is nozzle size and pressure at the nozzle, and the abrasive blasting air tool gives the figure; a worn nozzle one size larger wants a quarter more air, which is why blasting contractors run short of pressure halfway through a job. Rental machines for this work go to Vizag with aftercoolers, moisture separators and, where the coating specification demands it, a dryer, and are commissioned on site.
Parawada pharma SEZ and Atchutapuram
The pharmaceutical and chemical plants at Parawada and Atchutapuram are audited plants with written air-quality specifications: oil content class, pressure dew point, particle class, and a maintenance record that an inspector will read. We supply and commission compressors, dryers and filtration against those specifications, test the installed set with a dew-point and oil-content measurement recorded on the acceptance sheet, run maintenance contracts that keep the records, and supply standby or rental sets, specified to the same standard, during audits, outages and expansions. The food-grade and oil-free air page explains the air-quality classes in plain terms. On the coast, the desiccant dryer’s purge and the refrigerated dryer’s condenser both deserve attention, because a salt-coated condenser is the first thing to fail.
Fishing harbour, seafood and food processing
The fishing harbour and the seafood processors around it use compressed air for packing, pneumatic valves, ice-handling and plant cleaning, in a wet, salty, cold-room environment. Air must be dry and oil-free at the point of use; drains must work; and the compressor is best placed in a dry, ventilated room away from the processing floor. Food-grade lubricant or an oil-free machine, a refrigerated dryer, coalescing and sterile filtration where the product demands it, and a stainless or coated receiver are the usual arrangement, and the aquaculture and food-processing notes on the Andhra Pradesh page apply.
Key facts for a Visakhapatnam site
- Distance: about 620 km from Tarnaka; a rental delivery is a full day’s transport each way, a service visit is a multi-day trip grouped with other Vizag work, and parts travel ahead by road or courier.
- Climate: hot and humid; summer highs around 36 °C with high humidity, a long monsoon, and cyclone risk from October to December. Humidity rather than heat is the design condition.
- Air: salt-laden on the coast, with coal, ore and soot in the port and steel belt. Coolers, cabinets and receivers need coastal specification.
- Power: the city’s industrial supply is good; the newer estates and the rural fringe interrupt more.
- What we do here: sales of new machines through our supply tie-ups, inspected used and refurbished machines from our Secunderabad yard, rental from our own fleet by the month, service and repair of all makes, maintenance contracts with records, overhauls in Secunderabad, spares, dryers and filters.
Sales: New, used and refurbished for the coast
For a Vizag plant we specify for the coast from the start: coated coolers, sealed cabinets, coated receivers, dryers sized for the humidity, and drains that work. We have supply tie-ups with all major makes, we are not the authorised dealer of any, and the comparison between makes for a coastal site includes how each is built for salt, not only its energy figure; the selection guide explains the method. For a workshop, a contractor or a processor, an inspected used or refurbished machine from our yard, load-tested with a six-month warranty and delivered with its test sheet, is often the right value, with a new dryer for the coast; the used compressors page sets out what is inspected.
Rental in Vizag: Projects, shutdowns and standby
Rental to Vizag is by the month, because the delivery is a day each way. Our fleet supplies portable diesel compressors for blasting, painting, construction and dock work, with aftercoolers, separators and dryers specified against the coating or process requirement, and skid-mounted electric screw compressors, with dryers and filtration, as standby or supplementary air for plants in the SEZ and the estates. Machines arrive with hoses and a commissioning check by a service engineer, and fuel for a diesel machine is the hirer’s. The own-or-hire calculator lets a Vizag contractor run the decision with their own hours and fuel figures.
Service, repair and maintenance contracts
| Situation | What we need first | What then happens |
|---|---|---|
| Plant air out of specification in the SEZ | Compressor, dryer and filter nameplates, the specification, recent results | A service engineer with instruments tests dew point and oil content on site; the fix is usually in the dryer, filters, drains or a salt-coated condenser |
| Compressor tripping or corroding on the coast | Nameplate, controller display, photographs of the cooler, cabinet and canopy | Telephone diagnosis, then a visit with cooler-cleaning equipment, the likely sensor or valve, and coastal-specification replacements where corrosion is found |
| Contractor compressor losing pressure at the dock | Nameplate, hours, gauge readings under load, nozzle sizes | A visit with filters, valves and instruments; often a nozzle-wear or separator question rather than a compressor fault |
| Overhaul or airend exchange | Hours, noise and vibration history, oil analysis if available | The airend goes to our Secunderabad workshop; a rental machine covers the plant |
| Maintenance contract | Machine list with nameplates, hours, criticality, audit dates | A visit calendar built from hours and grouped with other Vizag work; consumables carried; dryers, drains, coolers and cabinets inspected; records kept |
At this distance a maintenance contract is not an option but the normal way of working; the AMC page explains the structure.
Spare parts to Visakhapatnam
Intake filters, separator elements, oil (including food-grade), belts, inlet and minimum-pressure valves, thermostatic elements, dryer filters and desiccant, drain valves, cooler cores in coastal specification, cabinet filters and controller sensors are what Vizag consumes, and the coast consumes coolers and drains faster than anywhere else we serve. Parts travel ahead by road or courier, or with the service engineer for planned work. We identify a part from the nameplate and a photograph of the component, not from the canopy name; the spare parts page explains what to photograph. A Vizag plant should hold a season of intake and cabinet filters, drain valves and a thermostatic element on site.
A worked example: A hull-blasting contractor at the dock
A ship-repair contractor asks for compressed air for two blasting operators working hull plate with 10 mm nozzles at 7 bar g at the nozzle, plus pneumatic tools. From the nozzle size and pressure, each nozzle wants roughly 7 m³/min of free air, and a nozzle worn to 11 mm wants about a quarter more; two operators plus tools and an allowance for wear comes to about 17 m³/min at the compressor at 8.5 bar g to allow for hose losses over 60 metres. The answer is a 21 m³/min, 10 bar g portable diesel compressor rather than a 17 m³/min machine with no margin, with an aftercooler and a cyclone separator so that the abrasive does not clog with wet air, and, because the coating specification calls for dry blast air, a portable refrigerated dryer sized for the coastal humidity between the compressor and the blast pots. The machine is placed on the landward side of the dock, its cooler is cleaned at each refuelling, and the hire is by the month with a service engineer’s commissioning check and a mid-hire inspection.
Common mistakes at Vizag sites
- Installing an inland-specification compressor beside the harbour and discovering the cooler, cabinet and receiver corroding within a year.
- Draining receivers by hand on the coast and expecting dry air.
- Sizing a dryer from the nominal flow without the coastal humidity and inlet temperature.
- Blasting with worn nozzles and blaming the compressor for the loss of pressure.
- Specifying “oil-free” for an SEZ plant without stating the class, dew point and test method.
- Ordering a part by the canopy name rather than the number on the component.
How Reddy Compressors helps
We have supplied, hired out and serviced compressors on the Andhra coast for more than two decades, and Vizag’s dock, steel and pharma work shaped how we specify for salt and humidity. We are an independent, multi-brand business with supply tie-ups across all major makes, our own rental fleet, our own yard of inspected used machines, a workshop for airend and engine work, and more than 20 service engineers and technicians, all working from Tarnaka in Secunderabad.
What to send us
- A photograph of the compressor, dryer and filter nameplates and, for a fault, the controller display and the cooler.
- Where the site is: the port area, the SEZ plot, the estate or the landmark.
- For a plant: the air-quality specification and the list of air users with hours.
- For a contractor: the tools, nozzle sizes, hose lengths and the coating or process requirement.

How do you handle a breakdown at that distance?
By telephone and photographs first, so that the service engineer travels with the right parts, and by agreeing the visit with you. For critical plants a maintenance contract with a standby set is the arrangement that avoids waiting on the road.
Can you supply compressors built for salt air?
Yes. Coated coolers, sealed cabinets, coated receivers, dryers sized for the humidity and electronic drains are specified from the start for coastal sites, through our supply tie-ups across all major makes.
Do you supply audit-ready air for plants at Parawada?
Yes. We supply and commission against a written air-quality specification, test the installed set against it, and run maintenance contracts that keep the records an audit expects.
Do you rent compressors for blasting and painting at the shipyard and dock?
Yes, with aftercoolers, separators and dryers specified against the coating requirement, delivered by road, commissioned on site and hired by the month. Fuel is the hirer’s.
Can you service a compressor of a make you did not supply?
Yes. We service and repair every major make of compressor and dryer and supply parts for them. Send the nameplates.
Do you supply air for seafood processors at the fishing harbour?
Yes. Oil-free or food-grade lubricated compressors with refrigerated dryers, coalescing and sterile filtration and coated receivers, placed away from the wet processing floor.
Is a used compressor sensible for a Gajuwaka fabrication shop?
