Piston air compressors in Hyderabad: 2–10 hp and two-stage units

10 min read11 sections

Which piston compressor suits your business

Most small buyers in Hyderabad ask for a compressor by horsepower. Horsepower is a rough guide; what matters is free air delivery (FAD) at the pressure your tools need, the tank size that covers short bursts, and whether your supply is single- or three-phase. The table gives typical starting points. Confirm with the tool-list method below or our reciprocating compressor guide.

BusinessTypical HPStageTank (litres)Cut-out pressureSupply
Two-wheeler service and puncture shop2–3Single90–1508–10 bar(g) (116–145 psig)Single-phase
Car service centre (2–4 bays)5–7.5Two220–30012 bar(g) (174 psig)Three-phase
Tyre shop with truck and bus tyres7.5–10Two300–50012 bar(g) (174 psig)Three-phase
Fabrication or general workshop5–10Two220–50010–12 bar(g) (145–174 psig)Three-phase
Small plant (packing, pneumatic machines)7.5–10, or move to screw above thisTwo300–500 plus line receiver10–12 bar(g) (145–174 psig)Three-phase
Dental clinic (1–3 chairs)0.5–2, oil-freeSingle30–907–8 bar(g) (101.5–116 psig)Single-phase

Two-stage units are the norm above about 5 hp in Hyderabad because truck tyre changers and 3/4 inch impact wrenches want 10–12 bar(g), and a single-stage pump running at that pressure runs hot in summer. For dental surgeries, use an oil-free unit with a dryer; see dental air compressors. If your compressor will run more than about 60–70% of the time, a screw machine is usually the better buy; see rotary screw vs reciprocating.

Worked example: sizing for a car service centre

This is an illustrative three-bay car service centre in Hyderabad. The air use per tool is a typical figure while the tool is running; use-factor is the share of a working hour the tool actually runs.

ToolQtyAir while running (cfm)Use-factorAverage (cfm)
1/2 inch impact wrench3160.104.80
Tyre changer (car)140.200.80
Tyre inflator with gauge220.251.00
Blow gun370.102.10
Grease and oil dispensing pumps240.100.80
Foam washer tank140.251.00
Touch-up spray gun180.151.20
Total average demand11.70
  • Add 15% for leaks in hoses and couplers: 11.70 × 1.15 = 13.46 cfm.
  • A piston compressor should not be loaded more than about 65% of the time, so FAD needed is 13.46 ÷ 0.65 = 20.7 cfm (0.586 m³/min).
  • Allow 10% for growth: 20.7 × 1.10 = 22.8 cfm. A 7.5 hp (5.5 kW) two-stage unit giving about 23 cfm FAD fits.
  • Duty check: 13.46 ÷ 23 = 0.585, so the compressor runs loaded about 59% of the time. Good.

Peak check. Suppose two impact wrenches, one tyre changer and one blow gun run together: 2 × 16 + 4 + 7 = 43 cfm against 23 cfm delivered, a shortfall of 20 cfm. A 300 litre tank working between 9 and 12 bar(g) stores 0.300 × (12 − 9) ÷ 0.950 = 0.947 m³ of free air, which is 0.947 × 35.315 = 33.5 cfm-minutes. That covers the 20 cfm shortfall for 33.5 ÷ 20 = 1.67 minutes, about 100 seconds. Wheel changes are short bursts, so 300 litres is enough. With a 220 litre tank it would be 74 seconds. The full method, including bore and stroke, is in our national reciprocating guide; the workshop context is in garages, tyre shops and service centres.

Single-phase or three-phase for a small shop

Many Hyderabad shops have only a single-phase connection. Single-phase motors are practical up to about 3 hp. Above that, starting current, voltage drop and motor heating make three-phase the sensible choice, and most 5 hp and larger compressors are three-phase only.

PointSingle-phase (230 V)Three-phase (415 V)
Practical sizeUp to about 3 hp (2.2 kW)3 hp and above
Running current, 3 hpAbout 14 AAbout 4–5 A per phase
Starting currentAbout 5–7 times runningAbout 5–7 times running, shared over three phases
Behaviour on low voltageSlow start, capacitor and winding failures, MCB tripsMore tolerant; watch for single-phasing
ProtectionCorrect MCB curve, overload relayStarter with overload relay and phase-failure relay

Worked example: voltage drop on a long cable

An illustrative 3 hp single-phase compressor sits at the back of a shop, 30 m from the meter, fed with 2.5 mm² copper cable. Resistance is 7.41 ohm per km at 20 °C; we allow 1.2 times for a warm cable, so 8.89 ohm per km, or 0.00889 ohm per metre.

  • Single-phase current flows out and back, so the loop length is 2 × 30 = 60 m and loop resistance is 60 × 0.00889 = 0.533 ohm.
  • Running at 14 A: 14 × 0.533 = 7.5 V drop, 3.2% of 230 V. Acceptable.
  • Starting at about 6 times, 84 A: 84 × 0.533 = 44.8 V drop, 19.5%. The motor sees about 185 V at start, before any dip in the grid supply itself.

On a summer evening when the street supply is already at 210 V, the motor gets about 165 V while starting against a tank at cut-in pressure. It stalls, the overload trips, or the capacitor fails. With 6 mm² cable (3.08 ohm per km) the starting drop falls to 18.6 V, 8.1%. Moving the same work to a 7.5 hp three-phase motor on 2.5 mm² cable gives a starting drop of about 28.4 V, 6.8% of 415 V. The rule: keep a single-phase compressor close to the meter, use generous cable, and ask an electrician to check supply voltage at the compressor while it starts.

Running cost per month

Electricity is the largest cost of owning a piston compressor. Using the car service centre above, at an illustrative tariff of ₹9 per kWh:

  • Electrical input when loaded: 5.5 kW motor ÷ 0.88 motor efficiency = 6.25 kW.
  • Loaded hours per day: 10 hours open × 0.585 duty = 5.85 hours.
  • Energy per month: 6.25 × 5.85 × 26 working days = 950.6 kWh.
  • Cost per month: 950.6 × ₹9 = about ₹8,556 (illustrative).

Of the 13.46 cfm average demand, 1.76 cfm is the leak allowance, roughly 13% of the bill. If the compressor is left switched on after closing, leaks keep it cycling all night. Fixing couplers, switching off at closing and draining the tank daily cost nothing. Use our air compressor running cost calculator with your own tariff and hours.

Maintenance schedule for small piston compressors

Small piston units fail mainly from neglect: dirty filters, old oil, loose belts and water left in the tank. This is a typical schedule; follow the maker’s manual where it differs.

ItemDailyWeeklyMonthly or 250 hEvery 6 months or 500–1,000 h
Tank drainOpen drain, let water outCheck auto drain if fitted——
Oil level (lubricated units)Check sight glassTop up with compressor oil only—Change oil (first change at 50–100 h on new pumps)
Air filter—Tap out dust; more often in dusty roadside shopsClean or replaceReplace
Belt and guard—Look for cracks and glazingCheck tension and pulley alignmentReplace if worn
Safety valve—Lift by hand briefly—Check lifting pressure
Valve plate and reeds——Note pump-up timeInspect, decarbonise, replace reeds as needed
Pressure switch and unloaderNote cut-in and cut-out—Check unloader bleeds on stopCheck contacts and settings
Leaks—Listen after closingSoap-test couplers and hoses—

A slow pump-up time is the earliest sign of worn valves or rings. Learn the method in compressor pump-up test and capacity check. For larger two-stage and high-pressure machines, a fixed yearly plan is available; see compressor AMC.

Common faults in Hyderabad summers

From March to June, afternoons of 40–45 °C push small piston compressors to their limit, especially in tin-roofed shops and closed corners.

SymptomLikely summer causeWhat to do
Motor trips or hums and will not startLow evening voltage; starting against pressure because the unloader is stuckCheck voltage at start; repair unloader; larger cable
Pump very hot, oil smellNo ventilation, dirty cooling fins, single-stage running at 10–12 bar(g)Move to open air or shade with airflow; clean fins; consider two-stage
Oil in the air lineThin hot oil past worn rings; wrong grade of oilCorrect compressor oil; check rings
Tank takes longer to fillCarbon on valves from heat; clogged filter in dustValve plate service; filter change
Belt squeal and slippingBelt stretches in heatRe-tension; replace glazed belt
Water at tools in JuneMonsoon humidity; tank not drainedDrain daily; add an aftercooler or dryer for paint

For water at paint guns, see air dryers in Hyderabad. If the fault is beyond the shop, book a visit through air compressor repair in Hyderabad.

Used or new for a small piston unit

For a small shop, a new compressor of 2–5 hp is often the simplest choice, because the price gap to a used unit is small and a new pump starts with full life. Used and refurbished units make more sense for larger two-stage machines of 7.5 hp and above, or where you need a unit quickly.

  • Used and refurbished from us: six-month warranty on the whole compressor from the delivery or invoice date. It excludes consumables, misuse or wrong oil, service by others, and accident or site damage.
  • What to check on any used unit: pump-up time against rating, oil in the discharge, knocking, tank corrosion and the date of the last tank inspection, and a working safety valve.
  • New units carry the maker’s warranty, which varies by make; ask for it in writing.

What drives the price of a piston compressor

  • FAD and motor size. Ask for FAD, not displacement; FAD is usually 70–80% of displacement on small units.
  • Single- or two-stage. Two-stage costs more but runs cooler at 10–12 bar(g) and delivers more air per kW.
  • Tank size and build. Bigger tanks and tested, certified vessels cost more.
  • Pump speed and construction. Slower, cast-iron pumps cost more and last longer than fast aluminium pumps.
  • Oil-free or lubricated. Oil-free units for dental and laboratory use cost more.
  • Motor and starter. Motor efficiency class, starter, phase-failure relay and auto drain.

What size air compressor do I need for a garage in Hyderabad?

A two-wheeler shop usually manages with a 2–3 hp single-phase unit and a 90–150 litre tank. A car service centre with two to four bays typically needs 5–7.5 hp two-stage with 220–300 litres. Add up tool demand, allow 15% for leaks and keep the compressor loaded no more than about 65% of the time, as in the worked example above.

Which air compressor is best for a tyre shop?

For car tyres only, a 3–5 hp unit at 10 bar(g) is usually enough. For truck and bus tyres, use a 7.5–10 hp two-stage compressor at 12 bar(g) with a 300–500 litre tank, because truck tyre changers and 3/4 inch impact wrenches need high pressure in short bursts. A three-phase supply is strongly preferred at this size.

How many cfm does a 2 hp, 3 hp or 5 hp air compressor give?

Typical FAD figures for small piston units are about 5–6 cfm for 2 hp, 7–9 cfm for 3 hp and 12–15 cfm for 5 hp; 7.5 hp two-stage gives about 20–24 cfm and 10 hp about 28–32 cfm. Figures vary with make and pressure. Displacement figures are higher, so compare quotes on FAD at your working pressure.

Can I run a 5 hp compressor on single-phase supply?

It is possible with special motors, but rarely wise. A 5 hp single-phase motor draws high starting current, which on a long cable or a weak evening supply causes stalling, trips and capacitor failures. For 5 hp and above, a three-phase supply is the reliable choice. If you have only single-phase, keep to 3 hp or two smaller units.

Do you supply dental compressors in Hyderabad?

Yes. We supply oil-free compressors for dental clinics, sized by the number of chairs, usually with a small dryer and filters so the air at the handpiece is dry and oil-free. Oil-free units cost more than lubricated ones, but lubricated workshop compressors should not be used for dental air. See our dental air page for sizing.

Do you service and repair piston air compressors near me?

We service larger two-stage and high-pressure piston compressors across Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Telangana, including units we did not supply: valve plates, rings, unloaders, pressure switches, belts, motors and tank safety checks. Small 2–10 hp units for garages, tyre shops and workshops are for sale and hire only; we do not service them. Send the nameplate photo, the symptom and how long the tank takes to fill on WhatsApp, and we will bring the likely parts. AMC is available for plants that want fixed visits on these larger machines.
